Read the essay and answer the questions.

1. What are the arguments for a ban on mobile phones?

2. What are the arguments against a ban?

3. In which paragraph does the writer give a personal opinion? What is it?

Mobile phones should be banned from schools.

Discuss.

1. Our school plans to ban mobile phones because many teachers complain that they are a nuisance. There are arguments both for and against this rule.

2. One of the arguments for the ban is that people say that phones cause problems at school. Students forget to turn their phones off during class, and if one rings, it disturbs the whole class. Outside the classroom, phones can also cause more serious problems, such as cyberbullying. They say that it is worse if students have access to the internet at school.

3. On the other hand, phones can be a great resource for students. For instance, students use their mobiles in class to research information online. In addition, students can use apps on their phones to help them with schoolwork, for example by creating homework reminders.

4. Personally, I am not in favour of banning mobiles completely as students need them before and after school. However, I think students should agree to keep their phones on silent and in their bags.

Paragraph 1: Introduction

(Đoạn 1: Giới thiệu)

Some people maintain that the benefits of vocational courses are greater than those of more traditional ones. That is the question we need to consider.

Paragraph 2: Arguments for

(Đoạn 2: Luận cứ ủng hộ)

It is certainly true that the workplace is becoming more competitive. A vocational course may be a more direct route into employment compared to traditional courses. It is also undeniable that certain jobs (for example nurse, hairdresser) are only available to people with a vocational qualification.

Paragraph 3: Arguments against

(Đoạn 3: Luận cứ phản bác)

On the other hand, choosing a vocational course means deciding what job you want to do when you are still at school. Many people believe this is too early. How can a teenager know what job is right for him or her? Another problem is that vocational courses only focus on what you need to learn for a particular job. Is it not better for students to explore other interests while at university?

Paragraph 4: Conclusion (the writer's opinion)

(Kết luận (ý kiến của người viết))

On balance, I do not believe that students should choose vocational courses unless they are sure what career they want to follow. It is wiser to opt for a course that really interests you.

Bess

Read the essay. What is the writer's opinion about the problem? How many solutions does she propose?

Most people agree that the lack of exercise in teenagers' lives is a serious problem. But what are the causes of this problem and what can we do to address them?

I strongly believe that today's teenagers spend too much time playing on electronic gadgets. They hardly ever do outdoor activities and this is why many of them do not get enough exercise. What is more, many teenagers are overweight and this makes them less willing to do exercise.

In order to tackle this problem, a number of measures are necessary. In my view, it is unrealistic to limit the amount of time teenagers spend on gadgets. What I propose instead is that we make sure school canteens only serve healthy food. Furthermore, I would strongly recommend that we give all teenagers free membership of their local sports facilities.

To conclude, lack of exercise can cause long-term health problems, so it is vital that we act now. It seems to me that the measures I propose will begin to remedy the situation.

The writer's opinion is that the lack of exercise in teenagers' lives is a serious problem, caused by spending too much time on electronic gadgets and being overweight.

The writer proposes two solutions:

(Người viết đề xuất hai giải pháp)

- Making sure school canteens only serve healthy food.

(Đảm bảo căng tin trường học chỉ phục vụ thức ăn lành mạnh.)

- Giving all teenagers free membership of their local sports facilities.

1. What time of year do most teenagers do work experience in the UK?

2. Why does the writer think work experience is useful?

3. How long are placements?

4. What does Paul want to do when he finishes school?

The world of work experience

Forget relaxing with friends. The end of the school year is a time for working for most fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds in the UK. Around half a million teenagers in the UK do work experience every summer. This is a useful way to find out which jobs you might enjoy in the future. It is also important when you apply for university, or get a job in the future. For example, if you want to study to be an engineer, you could do work experience with a car manufacturer. Other popular work experience placements are in teaching, marketing, media, and finance. Placements usually last two weeks. Some teenagers have no idea what job they want to do. In this case, they need to think about their passions. For example, if you are interested in music, you could work in a music shop. Alternatively, if you love animals, you could work on a farm.

My work experience: Hi, I’m Paul, and I’ve just done two weeks’ work experience on a farm near where I live. It was brilliant. I enjoyed giving the animals their food in the morning. I also made sure the animals had exercise and I kept everything clean. At night, I helped to put the animals inside. It was hard work but I loved it. I hope the farm will give me a job when I finish school.

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of communication - having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.

The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future, many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones. Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn't remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer's doctor didn't agree.

What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile phone too often

According to the passage, what makes mobile phones potentially harmful is ______.

A. their raiding power

B. their power of attraction.

C. their invisible rays

D. their radiant light.
