Read the text and decide whether the following statement are True (T) or False (F) You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your neighbors. If you are lucky, you have good neighbors. But some neighbors are not pleasant and can make your life miserable at times. If you have good neighbors, consider yourself blessed. Neighbors can play an important role in our community and our lives, and remember, you are a neighbor too. By definition, a neighbor is someone who lives close by you, but “close” is a relative term. For the city dweller, the neighbor is probably someone in the next apartment, but for the urban family, the neighbor is a bit further away. And for those who live out in rural areas, the neighbor may live a mile or two away. But what’s a good neighbor? A good neighbor is friendly and considerate. Though good neighbors may live close, they respect your space and privacy. Good neighbors wave at you, may stop to pet your dog and chat, and buy lemonade from your children. Good neighbors take time to talk and smile. They reach out to connect to you.

1…………..You can pick your friends, and you can choose your neighbors
2…………..Bad neighbors can make your life miserable at times
3…………..Neighbors can play an important role in our community and our lives 4…………..For the city dweller, the neighbor is probably someone is a bit further away.
5................For those who live out in rural areas , the neighbor may live a mile or two away
6................Good neighbors don't respect your space and privacy though they live close to you

Read the text, then decide if the statements are true or false Cutting down on waste Hello everyone! My name is Jennie. Today I want to talk about a very important topic and that is cutting down on waste. Here are some simple tips and simple actions that you can add or incorporate into your lifestyle to help look after our planet. Before I talk a little bit about some actions that you can take into changing your lifestyle to help the environment and to help cut down on waste, I just want to jog your memory about the three Rs, which are always important to remember and that is ‘Reduce’, ‘Reuse’ and ‘Recycle’. Reducing waste actually helps to prevent waste being produced in the first place, and it’s probably one of the best ways to start off with because if you don’t have waste in the first place, then we don’t have the problem of disposing of it. An example of how you can do this is perhaps by choosing loose fruit and vegetables at the supermarket rather than the ones which are packaged in plastic. Also, using a reusable plastic or metal bottle and reusable plastic containers are a great way to reduce the amount of plastic you accumulate. In my family, we use a lot of ice cream tubs. We use them to keep our leftover food and it works perfectly fine. The second R is to reuse items. Instead of throwing things straight into the rubbish bin, why don’t you see if you can reuse them again? I like to do this a lot with gift bags, which I get when I receive presents for special occasions. I usually keep the gift bags or the boxes and reuse them when I’m giving a gift to someone else. You can also do the same thing with plastic bags. Instead of getting a new bag every time you go food shopping, just bring your old ones along, and that way you’re cutting down on the amount of plastic that you accumulate. And finally, recycle. Recycling turns waste products into a new item, or, as I like to say, it gives them a second life. I’ve recently been clearing out my wardrobe and throwing away some clothes that I no longer like or perhaps don’t fit me any more – and the money from selling them goes towards helping a charity, so it’s a win-win for all. 27. The meaning of the Three R's: Reduce, Repair and Report A. True B. False 28. We should choose loose fruit and vegetables instead of the plastic-wrapped or packaged ones. A. True B. False 29. Jennie uses ice cream tubs to keep leftovers. A. True B. False 30. Every time Jennie receives a present, she always throws the gift bag straight into the rubbish bin. A. True B. False 31. According to Jennie, we cannot reuse plastic bags. A. True B. False 32. Recycling turns new products into waste. A. True B. False

Many students listen to music while they are studying, and say that it helps them learn. Many parents and teachers say that music is just distracting, and that students are better studying in silence. Who is right? In a study, some scientists asked three groups of students to listen to a piece of music by Mozart or a relaxation tape for ten minutes, or just sit in silence for ten minutes. The students then did a ‘spatial reasoning’ test (a test about remembering shapes and imagining looking at objects from different directions), and the ones who had listened to the Mozart did better in the test. Taking part in musical activities and learning to play an instrument can improve verbal memory (the ability to remember words). The longer the training lasts, the better the improvement in the memory. So, there’s no excuse to give up the piano lessons!

53. Many students think it’s helpful to listen to music when studying.

54. Teachers say music helps students to better concentrate.

55. The students who had listened to Mozart did better in the spatial reasoning test.

56. Music training helps to improve memory

You must be able to “do” things with what to know. For example, it is not enough simply to read a book on how to fly an aeroplane. A book can give you lots of information about how to fly, but if you only read a book and then try to fly without a great deal of practice first, you will crash and kill yourself. The same is true of learning the piano or learning a foreign language. Can you speak English well without having lots of practice? “Practice makes perfect” is what every learner of a foreign language should know. 1. Learning a foreign language and learning to fly are the same in an important way. 2. Information about flying from books is enough for someone to fly a plane. 3. You can learn English well only by reading books in English. 4. Talking to a native speaker can be a good way to speak a foreign language well. 5. Practicing a foreign language regularly makes you very good at it

IV. READING

Read the passage and then decide whether the sentences are True (T) or False (F).

The meaning of a kiss depends on where you are. A kiss means “I love you” in many countries. In some countries, a kiss can be friendly greeting, or a goodbye. South Americans and Europeans say hello with kisses much more often than North Americans. They also sometimes say goodbye by kissing their own fingertips and then “blowing” the kiss away. In these regions, men at business meeting even greet each other with a kiss on the cheek, instead of a handshake.

Then there are beliefs that kissing has a special meaning. In ancient Rome, the groom at a wedding must kiss the bride as a legal agreement. And did your mother ever kiss your hurt finger to make the pain stop? English used to think that kisses have magical powers.

Not everyone in the world kisses though. Eskimos couples rubbed their noses together, and so did some African tribes and Pacific Islanders. The Ainu of Japan preferred to bite their loved one’s cheek.

These days, kissing is mostly a sign of romance. Thanks to international travel and sharing customs, that meaning has become universal.
