II. Read the passage carefully, and do the tasks that follow. Task 2: Read the passage again, and answer the questions below. The Voice The Voice is a two-time Emmy Award winning, the number one series on NBC, featuring the countrys best unknown artists and four of the biggest names in music as coaches.

The shows innovative format features five stages of competition: the first begins with the blind auditions, followed by the battle rounds, the knockouts, the live playoffs and finally, the live performance shows.

During the blind auditions, the decisions from the musician coaches are based solely on voice and not on looks. The coaches hear the artists perform, but they dont get to see them - thanks to rotating chairs. If more than one coach pushes his/her button, the power then shifts to the artists to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes his/her button, the artist is eliminated from the competition.

Once teams are set, the battle is on. Coaches dedicate themselves to developing their teams of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success, along with help from their celebrity advisers. During the battle rounds, the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. After the vocal battle, the coach must choose which of his/her singers will advance to the next round of competition, while the losing artist is available to be stolen by another coach. Each coach has two steals available during the battle rounds.
At the end of the battles, only the strongest members of each coachs roster remain and proceed to the knockout rounds. Here, the artists are paired against a teammate once more, but this time, they select their own songs to perform individually, while their direct competitor watches and waits. They are competing for their coach's confidence and decision to take them to the live shows. In the live playoff rounds, the Top 20 artists compete to secure a spot in the live shows. Artists perform live, and Americans vote to save their two favorite artists from each team. The coaches then save one remaining artist to complete their roster. The remaining contestants move on to the final phase of the competition, the live shows.
In the final live-performance phase of the competition, the Top 12 artists compete each week against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience votes to save their favorite artists.
In the end, one is named The Voice and receives the grand prize of a recording contract.

6. What is the format of The Voice? => It has five stages of competition: ________.

7. When is the artist able to choose the coach during the blind auditions? => When more than one coach pushes his/her button, _____.

8. What do the coaches do to prepare for the battle rounds? => They dedicate themselves to developing their teams of artists,___ .

Teenagers are more independent than younger kids, so parents will have a somewhat different role when it comes to helping them use the library and encouraging them to read for recreation. Books and Magazines In public libraries, teens will find a section of books specifically for them, often called the “Young Adult” section. Not only will teens be able to find resources for their schoolwork, they will be able to find age-appropriate novels and other works of fiction and non-fiction that will be of interest. Libraries also may offer a wide selection of magazines that teens will find appealing on topics such as sports, music, the outdoors, entertainment, and current events. Teens generally like to choose their own books and materials. Computers and Multimedia Many libraries lend CDs and DVDs, and have computers or multimedia programs that are of great interest to teens. Libraries may also offer computer, programming, and design courses. Review your library’s computer use and internet policy with your teen to make sure that he understands and follows all library guidelines, especially if you will not always be accompanying him to the library. Volunteer and Employment Opportunities Libraries often enlist teenagers to help with programs for younger children, such as tutoring summer reading participants, doing puppet and crafts shows, storytelling, and theater productions. In addition, libraries frequently offer part-time job opportunities for teens, both volunteer and paid, to help with such tasks as checking in books and re-shelving materials. Passage 1:

New Orleans, in Louisiana, is known as the most unique city in the United States with distinctive architecture, cross-cultural heritage and annual music festivals.

However, due to its location along the Mississippi River with lakes on the other side, and nearly half of the city below sea level, the city faces the danger of flooding. So, a levee system and drainage canals were built to protect the city.

Early in the morning of August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the most destructive natural disaster in the history of New Orleans, struck the city. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rains for several days. As a result, water from the river and lakes rose, breaking the levees and poured directly into the city. Soon 80 percent of the city was under the water. People scrambled to rooftops for safety, desperate for food and drinking water. The winds were so strong that even beds in Hyatt Hotel were seen flying out of the hotel windows. The loss was tremendous. Most of the major roads and bridges were destroyed, and houses collapsed. Nearly 2,000 people were killed. After the storm, several natural grounds for the breeding and migrating of different species of animals and birds were permanently lost.

Passage 2:

How can scientists predict earthquakes? Earthquakes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain areas. They happen in places where pieces of the earth’s surface meet. For example, earthquakes often occur on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of Asia.

Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth’s surface, like a sudden drop of water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes people have seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of the water, snake leaving their holes and other animals acting strangely.

After an earthquake happens, people can die from lack of food, water and medical supplies. The amount of destruction caused by an earthquake depend on types of building, soil conditions and population. Of the 6000 earthquakes on the earth each year, only about fifteen cause great damage and many deaths.
