$\Leftrightarrow \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{x-1}-\frac{9}{2}\sqrt{x-1}+3\sqrt{x-1}=-17$
$\Leftrightarrow -\sqrt{x-1}=-17$
$\Leftrightarrow \sqrt{x-1}=17$
