MEMORY

"Memorize these words". "Learn this spelling rule". "Don't forget about the quiz tomorrow".

You remember things every day, but how do you do it?

When you want to call a store or an office that you don't call often, you look in the telephone book for the number. You dial the number, and then you forget it! You use your short-term memory to remember the number. Your short-term memory lasts about 30 seconds, or half a minute. However, you don't need to look in the telephone book for your best friend’s number because you already know it. This information is in your long-term memory. Your long-term memory has everything that you remember through the years.

Why do you forget things sometimes? Is there a reason? Yes, there are several. The major reason for forgetting something is that you did not learn it well in the beginning. For example, you meet some new people, and right away, you forget their names. You hear the names but you do not learn them, so you forget them.

You can help yourself remember better. Here are some ideas:

1. Move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. You can do this if you practice the new information. Say it to yourself out loud. Think about it.

2. After you learn something, study it again and again. Learn it more than you need to. This process is called overlearning. For example, when you learn new words, practice using them in sentences. Don't try to memorize words from a list only.

3. Make sure that you understand new information. It is very difficult to remember something that you don't understand. Ask questions when you learn something new to be certain that you understand.

4. Do not listen to music or watch TV when you study. You will remember better if you concentrate on one thing at a time.

5. Try to connect new information with something that you already know. For example, when you learn the name of a new kind of food, think of a similar kind of food that you already know.

6. Divide new information into several parts (about five or six). Learn one part at time and stop for few minutes. Don't sit down and try to learn a very large amount of new information all at once.

7. Try to make a picture in your mind. For example, if you hear or see a new word, make a picture of how it looks to you in your mind. This “mental” picture will help you remember that word the next time you see or hear it.

8. Think of word clues to help you remember information. One very helpful kind of word clue is an acronym. An acronym is a word formed from the first letter of a group of words. For example, many American schoolchildren learn the names of the Great Lakes in the North America by remembering the word homes. Homes is an acronym that comes from the names of the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.

9. Relax when you study! Try to enjoy yourself. You are learning new things every minute. You will remember better if you are happy and relaxed.

All of these things would be useless for remembering new words EXCEPT______.

A. making a list of them and memorizing them

B. writing them down in your notebook

C. putting them in alphabetical order

D. practicing using them in sentences

A. lên danh sách và ghi nhớ chúng.

B. viết chúng ra sổ nhớ.

C. sắp xếp chúng theo thứ tự bảng chữ cái.

D. thực hành việc sử dụng chúng bằng các câu.

Dẫn chứng ở tip 2: “2. After you learn something, study it again and again. Learn it more than you need to. This process is called overlearning. For example, when you learn new words, practice using them in sentences. Don't try to memorize words from a list only”- (Sau khi bạn tiếp thu một điều gì đó, hãy nghiền ngẫm nó nhiều lần.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Househusbands

Dear Editor,

I read with interest the article on American families. In general I agree with it, but there are some important things it left out. It didn't tell the reader much about the life of a househusband. It's not an easy life. I know, because I'm now a househusband myself. A househusband has to change many of his ideas and his ways.

First of all, he has to change the way he thinks about time. Before I was a househusband, I worked full-time for the New York Times. I was a reporter, and time was always important. We had to finish our article quickly and give them to the editor. Everyone was always in a hurry. This is the way, many other men work, too. Businessmen, lawyers, bankers, and doctors all have to work quickly.

At home it's different. The househusband cannot be in a hurry all the time. If you rush around, you will make everyone unhappy! The children will be unhappy because they don't understand. For them, time is not important. Your wife will be unhappy because the children are unhappy. You will be unhappy, too, because they are all unhappy. So you have to learn to slow down. That is the first and most important rule for a househusband.

There is something else the househusband must learn. You must learn to show how you feel about things. At work, men usually do not talk about feelings. If they do, people think they are strange. So, many men are not used to telling anyone about their feelings. They do not know how to talk about their anger, worries, or love. But children need to know how you feel. They need to know how much you love them. If you are angry, they need to know why. Your wife also needs to know about your feelings. If you do not say anything, your family may get the wrong idea. Then there may be serious problems.

People talk a lot about househusbands these days. Usually they talk about men doing the housework, the cooking, cleaning, and shopping. But in my opinion, these are the easiest things to learn. It was much harder for me to change the way I think and the way I act with my family. I think, other men will also find this harder, but, like me, will find it necessary if they want to have a happy family!

Melissa, runner

I started running about a year ago. At first, I just ran 1 or 2 kilometers, but I now do about 10. My speed is improving too. I have joined a running club in the town center. I didn't know any of the members before, but now most of them are my mates. My dad was a keen runner when he was younger - he was really fit, but he stopped when he hurt his leg. Actually, I need to order some new running shoes - just a simple pair. I don't think the expensive ones make you run faster!

Sharon, skateboarder

I go skateboarding most evenings in the park. I suppose that's quite a lot, but the park is only a minute or two from our apartment, and I only stay there half an hour or so. Although I stay longer when my friends are there. Sometimes my cousin's there too. He's a beginner, and I'm teaching him a few moves. He's starting to get really good!

Latifa, rock climber

Two of my best friends suggested I should start rock climbing, so now the three of us do it together. The mother of one of them takes us once or twice a month, but I'd like to do it every week. When I started, I didn't know you need to get so much stuff - and it isn't exactly cheap! I really love it. I don't think I''ll ever get bored of climbing!

Lesson 2. Game together across the bridge. Four people need to cross a bridge. Because of the weak demand, each time we go not more than two people, and because it is dark, we have to take the light. Four people walk differently, crossing the bridge with corresponding time of 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 2 minutes and 1 minute. Since there is only one lamp, each passage must be carried back to the next person. When two people go together, cross the bridge with a slower time. The following example is a way to go: - 10 minutes to go with people 5 minutes to bridge, 10 minutes to take. - 5 minutes to take the lamp back, take 5 minutes. - 5 minutes to go with people 2 minutes through the bridge, It takes 5 minutes. - 2 minutes to take the lamp back, take 2 minutes. - 2 minutes with people 1 minute over the bridge, take 2 minutes. Total time is 10 + 5 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 24 minutes. Let's try to get away with a little less time as possible, and if less than 19 minutes is great

Dẫn chứng ở phần đầu: “When you want to call a store or an office that you don't call often, you look in the telephone book for the number. You dial the number, and then you forget it! You use your short-term memory to remember the number” – (Khi bạn muốn gọi điện tới một cửa hàng hoặc một văn phòng mà bạn không gọi tới thường xuyên, bạn tra số điện thoại đó trong danh bạ. Bạn quay số, và sau đó bạn quên nó. Bạn đã sử dụng trí nhớ ngắn hạn để nhớ số đó).
