How Equal Are Woman, Really?

On the face of it, women in Britain haven’t done too badly over the passed thirty years. There has been a woman Prime Minister a woman has gone into

space, and women are ordained as priests. They have won the right to equal

pay with men for the same work inspite of the fact that they still earn only

80% of their male colleague’s salaries. They have even become professionals

in what have always been considered male sports, like football. But can it

really be said that equality of the sexes is fact rather than wishful thinking. The trouble begins at school, though equality shouldn’t be an issue in education since, acording to the Department of Education’s statistics, they do better than boys in exams at all levels. Nevertheless, they are at an immediate

disadvantage as soon as they apply for jobs and go out to work. Teachers believe its vital to overcome this by encouraging them to study subjects like

physics, which have been almost exclusively a male preserve. A peice of

research recently carried out at Reading University may explain why boys

succeed, weather or not they have better academic qualifications. It shows that they are willing to call out answers in class and risk making mistakes, whereas girls feel self conscious. This capacity to take the lead is why boys tend to make a better impresion at an interview for a business career, though they may not always prove to be the best choice thereafter.

Interviewer: We have invited some students from Oak Tree School in Happy Valley to this Beyond 2030 forum, and they are going to share with us their vision of the future. Would you like to go first, Phong?

Phong: I believe the biggest change will take place within the school system. Apart from at school, we will also be learning from places which will give us real-life knowledge and experience, such as at a railway station, in a company, or on a farm.

Mai: I agree. This real-life application of learning will give us a sense of participation, a feeling that we are part of the process.

Interviewer: And what about the role of teachers?

Phong: Ah, they will be more like facilitators, rather than information providers.

Interviewer: Fascinating. How else do you see the future, Nguyen?

Nguyen: Well, I think the role of fathers will drastically change.

Interviewer: Oh yes? In what way?

Nguyen: The modern father will not necessarily be the breadwinner of the family. He may be externally employed or he may stay at home to take care of his children.

Interviewer: And do the housework?

Nguyen:  Yes. It’s work, paid or not, isn’t it?

Mai: Absolutely. The benefi t will be that children will see their fathers more often and have a closer relationship with them. I don’t see much of my dad, but I love every moment I spend with him.

Interviewer: Well, we are certainly covering some interesting topics …

TÓM TẮT BÀI VIẾT SAU:
Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good career easily. Companies toured the academic institutions, competing with each other to recruit graduates. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs. Most career organizations highlight three stages for graduates to follow in the process of securing a suitable career: recognizing abilities, matching these to available vacancies and presenting them well to prospective employers. Job seekers have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skilld within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study job vacancies and information in newspapers or they can visit a career office, write to possible employers for information or contact friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. Affter studying all the various options, they they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers. Good personal presentation is essential in the search for a good career. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employers’ need, explain why they are interested in a career with the particular company and try to show that they are already know something about the company and its activities. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability,, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.

For centuries, poets, writers and musicians have mentioned the ao dai in poems, novels and songs. The ao dai is the traditional dress of Vietnamese women. It consists of a long silk tunic that is slit on the sides and worn over loose pants. Traditionally, it was frequently worn bv both men and women. The desian and material used for men were different from those used for women. Nowadays, women usually wear it, especially on special occasions. However, many Vietnamese women today often prefer to wear modern clothing at work, because it is more convenient.

Now fashion designers want to change the traditional ao dai. Some have printed lines of poetry on the ao dai, so they look modern and very fashionable. Other designers have taken inspiration from Vietnam’s ethnic minorities.

They have visited villages and studied traditional designs and symbols such as suns, stars, crosses, and stripes. They have added these patterns to the ao dai, so Vietnamese women can continue to wear the unique dress, which is now both traditional and fashionable
