Topic 1: Talk about a problem that you have had at school or at home.

Everyone has had a problem and I am not an exception. I suffered from the pressure and stress of learning. I was not good at English, actually, my latest English test grade was not good. My parents were disappointed in me. I felt so sad and had negative thinking about myself. I think the reason maybe lack of motivation. Luckily, I got some advice from my best friend. He is very good at English. First, in English classes, I should pay attention to what the teacher said and remember its content, then practice. I can ask him to practise speaking English, also the teachers. Second, maybe I could find a tutor to teach me at home or go to an English center. Last, I should try to study harder. I ought to rewrite and remember new words and grammar whenever I have free time. Finally, my grades were better thanks to my best friend as well as my effort.

The first skill that you need to develop in order to be independent is finding information. When you are able to find information by yourself, you will be able to think independently and make informed decisions. Getting around on your own is the second important skill for you. Getting to know how to go around will help you not depend on others to go to places and take responsibility for being late. The last skill that makes you become independent is coping with loneliness. Lacking these skills may make you feel depressed and you may make the wrong decisions on your life.

It was a Friday afternoon, and I was helping my mother doing some house chores. When I was hanging clothes on the balcony, some of them were blown to the roof of my house. So I decided to use a long pipe to take them back. However, they were too far! I kept trying but it didn’t work. And suddenly, I slipped and fell down to the terrace. I felt hurt all over my body. I couldn’t even breathe. I remember there were a lot of dust on my body, and there were broken woods and plywoods everywhere. Right away, my family ran to me. They helped me to get up, they were totally shocked. My parents quickly took me to the hospital. Fortunately, I wasn’t on seriously injured. There were some wounds on my head, arms and legs. After that accident, I try to be more careful when doing anything, and always feel for the actors in action movies. To me, nothing is more precious than life.

The generation gap, which refers to a broad difference between one generation and another, especially between young people and their parents, usually leads to numerous conflicts. Such family conflicts can seriously threaten the relationship between parents and children at times.

It goes without saying that, however old their children are, parents still regard them as small kids and keep in mind that their offspring are too young to protect themselves cautiously or have wise choices. Therefore, they tend to make a great attempt to help their children to discover the outside world. Nevertheless, they forget that as children grow up, they want to be more independent and develop their own identity by creating their own opinions, thoughts, styles and values about life.

One common issue that drives conflicts is the clothes of teenagers. While teens are keen on wearing fashionable clothes which try to catch up with the youth trends, parents who value traditional clothes believe that those kinds of attire violate the rules and the norms of the society. It becomes worse when the expensive brand name clothes teens choose seem to be beyond the financial capacity of parents.

Another reason contributing to conflicts is the interest in choosing a career path or education between parents and teenagers. Young people are told that they have the world at their feet and that dazzling future opportunities are just waiting for them to seize. However, their parents try to impose their choices of university or career on them regardless of their children's preference.

Indeed, conflicts between parents and children are the everlasting family phenomena. It seems that the best way to solve the matter is open communication to create mutual trust and understanding.

Question 6. Why do teenagers want to choose their university or career?

A. They want to explore the world on their own.

B. They want to decide their future by themselves.

C. Both A and B are correct.

The text mentions three essential skills required for teenagers to become independent, which are decision-making skills, time-management skills, and life skills.

Apart from the skills mentioned in the text, some other skills teenagers need to become independent include communication skills, problem-solving skills, financial management skills, goal-setting skills, and critical thinking skills. Also, teenagers need to learn how to be emotionally intelligent and how to develop positive relationships with others.
