In Russia some years ago, it was quite cool to keep important things – keys, wallet, mobile phone, on the end of a long chain that hung down to your leg. You had to be young to do this. Not many of the followers of this realized that it came from Britain fifty years ago. In those days, that long chain was one component of the “Edwardian” style. It went together with a big jacket and very narrow trousers. The people who dressed like this were the “Teddy Boys”, the original youth culture, and, first of all, they were just youths who dressed in a particular style. In Britain, youth culture is much more than fashion. Put on the clothes, you start to move in a different way. If you don’t dress and move like other young men, then you make older and more respectable people nervous.

But what did people use to do before this technology? Let's take a look at some hobbies that were popular more than 100 years ago.
Many of the sports that we play today were popular in the past, too. Football became popular and had rules for the first time in the 19th century. Many football clubs were started by enployers, so that workers could play and stay fit. Football was a man sports but both men and woman played other sports, like tennis and croquet. Unfortunately, the long skirts worn at the time didn't help woman with their games at all.
Many girls and woman spent their spare times doing sewing and embroidery. They used a needle and thread to make tiny stitches on a piece of fabric. They made clothes and accessories such as scarves and gloves. They also made home decorations. They created beautiful pictures of flowers, birds and other patterns. They also used to embroider cushions, tablecloths and rugs.
Girls in the 19th centuey used to play with dolls and doll's houses. At the time, toys were handmade. The doll's heads were often made of china and the bodies were made of wood. Rocking horses were also very popular. They were made of wood and their tails were made of real horsehair. Boys used to play with toys trains and railways.
Finally, people in the 19th century loved nature, so one popular hobby was colllecting and drawing butterflies. People used to catch butterflies in nets and fix them on special boards with pins. They used to draw pictures that showed all the details and colours of the beautiful insects.
Past or present, hobbies are a great way to pass the time. They help us show our creativity and used our imagination.
