Mùa thu năm 930, quân Nam Hán đánh sang nước ta.
Khúc Thừa Mĩ chống cự không nổi, bị bắt đem về Quảng Châu. Nhà Nam Hán nhân đó cử Lý Tiến làm Thứ sử Giao Châu, đặt cơ quan đô hộ ở Tống Bình (Hà Nội).
Năm 931, một tướng cũ của Khúc Hạo là Dương Đình Nghệ được tin, đã đem quân từ Thanh Hoá ra Bắc bao vây, tấn công thành Tống Bình.
Quân Nam Hán lo sợ vội cho người về nước cầu cứu. Viện binh của địch chưa đến nơi thì Dương Đình Nghệ đã chiếm được Tống Bình và chủ động đón đánh quân tiếp viện. Quân tiếp viện của giặc vừa đến đã bị đánh tan tác. Tướng chỉ huy của chúng bị giết tại trận.
Sau khi đánh tan quân Nam Hán, Dương Đình Nghệ tự xưng là Tiết độ sứ, tiếp tục xây dựng nền tự chủ.
