Read the task above and the entry. Did the writer enjoy the book? Did he / she have any reservations?

A

Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't put down? The Hunger Games was like that for me. It's that good! Written by Suzanne Collins in 2006, it's sold millions of copies around the world and has been made into a film.

B

It's set in the future in a place called Panem and it tells the story of Katniss, a sixteen-year-old girl who competes in the Hunger Games with eleven other children. Only one child can survive the games, and Katniss is not optimistic about her chances. There are lots of twists and turns along the way.

C

What I love about the book is the character of Katniss. She's really strong and sensitive. She is practical-minded and loves freedom. She is also quick at getting the information and memorising things. I really identify with her. The story is very gripping. It is hard to put the book down once you start reading it.

D

All in all, this book is a real page-turner. I absolutely love it and I'd definitely recommend it. So if you haven't read it yet, buy it or borrow it. You won't be disappointed.

Your teacher has asked you to write an entry for the school magazine. Describe the book and say why you liked it.

S I saw a job advert for hotel staff and I was wondering if I could discuss it with you.

T Certainly. What would you like to know?

S Well, first of all, I’d like to know what the job involves.

T It involves cleaning guests’ bedrooms in the morning, and after that, working in the restaurant.

Oh, I see. Could you tell me what I would be doing in the restaurant?

T Mostly serving customers. The restaurant gets very busy at lunch time.

Well, I’m hard-working so that won’t be a problem. I’m also very polite and I enjoy working with the public.

T That’s good. You’ll need to be very patient and cheerful too.

I believe I possess those qualities too. The job sounds ideal for me. Something else I’d like to ask about is the hours. I’d be interested to know when I would start and finish work exactly. T The hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday.

S So I would get Sunday and Monday off?

T Yes, that’s right.

That’s good. Moving on to the question of pay, may I ask what the salary is?

Yes, it’s £7 an hour. We may occasionally ask you work overtime. Would you be willing to do that?

Yes, I think so. Finally, could I ask you about accommodation? I’d like to know if accommodation is included.

No, I’m afraid it isn’t. You’ll have to find your own accommodation. Is that a problem?

No, it isn’t. I’m staying at a friend’s flat and she says I can stay as long as I like.

Well, it sounds like you are ideally suited to the job, so I’d like to offer it to you.

Thank you. I’d be delighted to accept it.

"To Kill a Mockingbird: A Timeless Classic with Important Lessons"

My favourite book is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. It's a classic novel that has been beloved by many generations of readers.

The book is set in a small town called Maycomb in Alabama in the 1930s. The town is divided by race, and the story follows the life of a young girl named Scout Finch, who is growing up in this setting. Scout's father, Atticus, is a lawyer who is defending a black man who has been accused of a crime he did not commit. The trial and the events leading up to it are the main plot of the book.

The characters in the book are well-developed and memorable. Scout is a feisty and curious young girl who is trying to make sense of the world around her. Her brother Jem is older and more serious, and their friend Dill is imaginative and adventurous. Atticus is a wise and compassionate father who is trying to do what is right in a world that is often unjust.

What I love about "To Kill a Mockingbird" is its ability to convey important messages about racism, prejudice, and injustice through a compelling story and well-drawn characters. The book is both powerful and thought-provoking, and it has had a lasting impact on me. However, there are some aspects of the book that I found challenging, such as the use of racial slurs, which can be difficult to read. Despite this, I would highly recommend "To Kill a Mockingbird" to anyone who is interested in reading a classic novel that deals with important themes that are still relevant today. It is a book that has the power to change hearts and minds and is well worth reading.
