III. READING:  Ex4. Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Although the world’s energy resources have taken many millions of years to produce, we are quickly beginning to exhaust these supplies. Recently a UN committee reported that the world’s oil and gas supplies would last about 100 years if they were used carefully. The report stated that there would be enough oil and gas for a century only if the present demand could be controlled. If the demand continued to grow, the report said that fuel supplies would last for less than forty years. According to the report, governments must now take steps to control the amounts of fossil fuel which  are used.

1. How long have the world’s energy resources  taken to produce?

2. What did a UN committee report recently?

3. How many years would fuel supplies last, if the demand continued to grow?

4. Must government take steps to control the amounts of fossil fuel which  are used?

EX5. Read the following passage and tick true (T) or false (F)

Many people still believe that natural resources will never be used up. Actually, the world’s energy resources are limited. Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is left. However, we also should use them economically and try to find out alternative sources of power. According to Professor Marvin Burnharm of the New England Institude of Technology, we have to start conserving coal, oil and gas before it is too late; and nuclear power is the only alternative. However, many people do not approve of using nuclear power because it’s very dangerous. What would happen if there was a serious nuclear accident? Radioactivity causes cancer and may badly affect the future generations. The most effective thing is that we should use natural resources as economical as possible.

1. Natural resources will run out.

2. The world’s energy resources are unlimited.

This is a complicated problem. We burn fuel, and this causes air pollution. We throw away plastic bags, containing toys and other objects. These stay in the environment, they are not like paper or wood that slowly disappear. We have made thousands of new chemicals. Factories that make or use chemicals always have chemical wastes. These are often poisonous, and they also stay in the environment.

Yesterday, on the way home from school, I saw an accident. A boy was run over by a taxi when he was riding his bicycle. The boy’s leg was broken and it was bleeding badly. Someone there tried to stop the bleeding. They put pressure on it and held it tight. A man used his mobile phone to call the emergency service. Some minutes later, an ambulance arrived and sent the boy to the hospital. Two policemen came to the scene immediately.
