Three mile island nuclear power plant

America’s worst accident at a civilian nuclear power plant occurred on March 28, 1979, at Three Mile Island. Operators were trying to repair a problem with piping in the water circulation system, and they accidentally blocked the flow of water. This stopped the removal of heat from the reactor, and began a series of events that would change the way America thought about nuclear power.

Within ten seconds after the flow of water was blocked, the reactor vessel became hotter and the pressure rose. Safety control rods were automatically thrust down into the reactor, causing the chain reaction to stop completely. Pressure, however, continued to build. A relief valve opened but failed to close. As a result, too much water escaped, and the reactor began to melt down.

[1] Large quantities of radioactivity began to leak from the reactor. [2] Most of the radioactivity was contained, and it is likely that no one received a harmful amount of radiation. [3] “Three Mile Island” became the reason that many Americans are afraid of nuclear power to this day. [4]

It can be inferred that removing heat from a reactor is important because

A. It keeps pressure low enough to avoid accidents

B. It keeps the reactor producing energy

C. It stops a chain reaction

D. It stops radioactivity from leaking out of the reactor

Dear Rachel,

I am having a wonderful time here! We are on a lovely island in Cat Ba, called Monkey island. The hotel we are staying at is noceand quite. It’s got a lovely swimming pool.

The weather is hot and sunny. Right now, I am sitting outside a fantastic cafe by the sea. Nam is snorkeling in the clear water, as usual. He is looking for sheels to take home. Dad is vistting some ancient ruins on the island. Dad enjoys visitting old places- I think they are boring. Mum is buying sourvernirs at the market. She loves the market. She loves the market but it is a bit noisy for me.

We go to restaurants nearly every night for dinner. My favourite one is by the sea. Mom and Dad always order seafood but I never do- it’s horrible. I order pasta- it is so delicious! The sunsets are spectacular and the local people are really friendly, too. I love it here so much. I never want to leave!

Oh well, that’s all for now. See you next week.
