UNESCO has recognized the 82 Doctors’ stone tablets as a Memory of the World. They are inscribed with the names of 2,313 doctorate holders who passed the royal examinations between 1442 and 1780. The stone tablets, which bear the names of Trang Nguyen, Bang Nhan, Tham Hoa, and Hoang Giap (the first, second, third and fourth winning categories at the royal examinations), sit on the backs of stone turtles. These stone tablets are different from those in other Asian countries, including China which had influenced Vietnamese feudal education. The decorations on Viet Nam’s stone tablets were more diverse. By naming Viet Nam’s stone tablets as a Memory of the World, UNESCO also acknowledges Viet Nam’s efforts to preserve and promote heritage to international community. The recognition would also help to raise the awareness in heritage preservation.

II. Read the passage about the Temple of Literature, and then answer the questions.

The Temple of Literature is about 10 minutes away from Hoan
Kiem Lake. It was constructed in 1070 under Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty,
first to honor Confucius and nowadays to celebrate the doctorates and high

rank scholars of Vietnam. In 1076, Emperor Ly Nhan Tong continued the work and built the Imperial Academy
as the first university of Vietnam.
The temple is divided into five courtyards. The first courtyard is from the main gate to Dai Trung Gate. The
second is with Khue Van Pavilion. The pavilion symbol is used on all street signs of Ha Noi. The third
courtyard is the place where doctorate names were listed on the stone tablets above tortoise backs. The fourth
courtyard is dedicated for Confucius and his 72 honoured students, as well as Chu Van An - one of the most
famous teachers at the Imperial Academy. The last is also the farthest courtyard is Thai Hoc House, which was
used as the Imperial Academy. Thai Hoc House holds a small collection of old-time costumes for students and
scholars.

A combination of sewage, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind may destroy the huge statue on the outskirts of Cairo. This statue of the sun god has the body of a lion and the face of a human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too badly damaged to be completely saved.

The statue has already been dug out of the sad three times. However, the latest problems are much more serious. First, there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighborhood and the underground passages round the statue have become blocked. Too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it.

Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble and decay even faster.

Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature. For example, although the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Other natural forces such as serve sandstorms also attack the statue.

Finally, the tourists who visit the statue everyday also cause a lot of damage.

The dragon dance and the lion dance originated from China, and it has been introduced to many parts of the world. The dragon dance and lion dance are also popular in some traditional festivals in Vietnam. Dragons symbolize wisdom, power and wealth, and they are believed to bring good luck to people. The origin of the dragon dance can be dated back to the Han Dynasty(206 BC-220 AD). It was used in a ceremony for worshiping ancestors and praying for rain, and it gradually developed into an entertainment activity. By the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Song Dynasty(1960-1279), it had become a common ceremonial activity in festivals like CHinese New Year.

The dragon body is woven in a round shape of thin bamboo strips, segment-by-segment, and covered with a huge red cloth with dragon scalees decorating it. The whole dragon is usually up to the 30 meters in length - and people hold rods every 1 to 2 meters to raise the dragon segments.
