Causes of Thermal Pollution
  • Industrial effluent discharge

Industries that use large amounts of water as coolant, for example in power plants, steel industries, smelters, paper and pulp mills and chemical plants, release the heated water into nearby water sources without first cooling it appropriately

  • Urban runoff water

In cities that are covered by concrete and other man made materials in most parts are also causing thermal pollution. The streets, parking lots and other covered spaces are heated up by the sun. When rain or storm water falls on them, it absorbs the heat and runs of into the drains. This water is sometimes up to 10 Degrees warmer than the surrounding water. When untreated and allowed to flow into rivers seas or oceans, it causes thermal pollution in these waters.

Effects of Thermal pollution

Like the anecdote mentioned above there are ecological disturbances that occur when the temperature of water is increased.

  • First and foremost the levels of Oxygen are reduced in warmer water. This leads to death of many species of fish and other organisms including plants.
  • Higher temperature increases the metabolic activity of organisms in the water, causing them to consume more food. The resources of the ecosystem may not last for long in such a situation. Animals that can adapt to these conditions and are able to find more food tend to survive while others die.
  • Some fish, amphibians and those that have a migratory life will avoid the spaces that are affected by thermal pollution. Bio diversity is affected as a result.
  • Lesser oxygen content leads to conditions favourable for anaerobic bacteria which will increase in number. These digest their foods by fermentation, which adds to the contaminated condition of water and air.
  • Changes and adaptations occurring at the cellular levels cause decreased productivity and shorter life spans. These can occur even at 2 degrees Celsius variation from normal.
  • What happens when the water is colder than normal? When water is let off from dams, it is always the cooler deeper waters that are released, rather than the warmer surface water. In this case too, ecological changes occurs leading to shorter life spans, loss of species and alterations in biodiversity.

Thermal Shock

When there is an abrupt increase in the temperature of the water this leads to sudden death of all the fish and other organism in the water which are adapted to a certain temperature. This is called thermal shock. This is noticed when a power plant or an industry starts functioning for the first time and also when it has opened up after a break for repairs.

Control of Thermal Pollution

Heated water from industries can be treated before being released into the nearby water bodies. There are various mechanisms developed for this.

  • Cooling ponds and cooling towers where the heat is released through evaporation convection, heat transfer and radiation. These are manmade structures.
  • Cogeneration: a process by which the heated water is recycled for domestic use or industrial heating.
  • Storm water runoff is directed to under-ground basins by infiltration or bio-retention. These are included in the planning of the city and part of the green infrastructure.
  • Storm water basins are also in use but not as effective as these are exposed to the sun and its heat, not allowing the water to cool.

Conclusion

Though it may appear that thermal pollution may not affect humans directly, it is not true. Loss of bio diversity causes changes that affect all the aspects of the environment, because nothing is independent and no one survives completely on their own without relying on their environment.

There is the obvious effect on the food chain, where even now sea food collection has decreased dramatically, irrespective of all the food shows on TV which encourage massive consumption of a depleting food source.

Watching fish in an aquarium is a very effective relaxation therapy. Having a picnic by the river or lake is very invigorating. Listening to the buzzing of insects and the croaking of a watchful frog is companionable. Watching friendly dolphins leaping out of the water and grinning comically is very rejuvenating and inspiring.

Desiring to preserve the integrity of our environment is not selfish and planning and moving in this direction is the right thing to do.

Water pollution has become a continuous increasing problem on the earth which is affecting the human and animal lives in all aspects. Water pollution is the contamination of drinking water by the poisonous pollutants generated by the human activities. The whole water is getting polluted through many sources such as urban runoff, agricultural, industrial, sedimentary, leeching from landfills, animal wastes, and other human activities. All the pollutants are very harmful to the environment. Human population is increasing day by day and thus their needs and competition leading pollution to the top level. We need to follow some drastic changes in our habits to save the earth water as well as continue the possibility of life here.

If I am in good mood, I prefer to listen some energy rock music that keep me happy and full of power. If I am tired, I chose some calm, relaxing songs. Music can speak, through music people can express feelings and emotions. When you hear something that looks like you, that you understand it easily, you start to love it. There are several different ways to enjoy music as your hobby. When you discover an artist or musician that you satisfies, it’s clear that you want to collect all of their works. Not only listening to music, a music collection is a great hobby to have, too.

Topic: ENVIRONMENTThe environment is everything in the world, everything around us. There are four kinds of environment: water, air, soil and creature. The environtment is very important for our life, our health and our future. If you want to have a good health, you must live in a good environment. Countryside is the best example because there aren’t many factories and there are many trees in the countryside so the air is very fresh. It makes you feel comfortable and healthy. But today, the environment is the ho'est problem in the world because it is polluted by people who live in it- the main reason which causes the environmental pollu)on. The water becomes dirty and becovered by trash. The factories decant chemistry into stream, river and sea. Fishes, sea plants are died and +oat on the water surface. Many trees in the forest are cut down to make furnitures. Peoplethrow trash onto the water, the street or in the park. In addi)on, the weather is very hot and don’t have any rain in the long )me. There are many other reasons which make environmental pollu)on.Environmental pollu)on is not good for your healthy. It is the cause which makes illness and cancer like respiratory disease, lung cancer, etc… and you may die soon. So people have to do everything that is possible to reduce the pollu)on, protect the environment. Reusing, reducing and recycling arethe best ways.• When you buy some food in the market, the sellers usually give you plas)c bags to put the food in. Then, when you come home, you take the food out and throw the plas)c bags away. You know, the plas)c bags are di2cult to be burned. So now, please don’t do that, you can wash and use them for the next )me. It’s reusing.• Trees are very useful. They give us the oxygen and make the air clean. But everyyear, many trees are cut down illegally. We should avoid this situa)on. Reducing your family’s domes)c waste is a good idea and I think it’s necessary to do that. Because the waste is very dirty and solving waste is always the ho'est problem that always need the solu)ons.• The last, you can recycle the paper, cans, )ns,ect… which are used. By doing that, you can ear money and protect the environment. The environment is important for our life so we have to protect it. We should solve the environmental pollu)on together. Protect the environment, protect our life.

Life is a process, not a goal. Choosing where to spend your time, to spend your life has always been something to wonder by many. Countryside in general is a great place to live, however, also there are some disadvantages living there compared to in the city as well.

On one hand, the living environment in the countryside is fresh, clean and friendly in most cases. You don't have to worry about the industrial air, dust or pollution of the million vehicles commuting all day and all night. One more plus thing is that you are surrounded by green trees. There are spaces for you to farm, to enjoy planting and raising animals. It is most suitable for nature lovers.

On the other hand, there are high chances that it will be difficult to find certain forms of convenience like shops, airports, traffics, hospitals, entertainments, ... The choices of schools for your kids will also be limited. Travelling might be an ordeal sometimes since the public transports will not be very convenient as living in the city.

One more thing to consider is the people. In general, people in the countryside are more friendly and willing to give a hand. In the city however, everyone is busy going about their life, you are more likely to find yourself lonely in a crowded city than a lovely little town in the countryside.

Whichever kind of place you choose to live, it should be suitable for your life style, your family and most of all, your long-term plan of living. As long as you're happy, it does not matter the city or the countryside after all.
