Không ngờ chữ viết xấu đến nỗi quan không đọc được, bèn mắng binh đuổi nàng ra khỏi huyện. Trở về nhà, nàng kể một câu chuyện khiến Cao Bá Quát vô cùng ân hận. Anh biết rằng dù chữ viết có hay đến đâu, thì cũng chẳng ích gì nếu chữ không ra. Từ đó, anh chuyên tâm luyện viết chữ đẹp. Sáng ra, anh chống gậy vào cột nhà để tập viết cho cứng cáp. Mỗi buổi tối, anh ấy viết xong mười trang trước khi đi ngủ. Chữ viết có tiến bộ, anh mượn sách luyện chữ đẹp làm mẫu để luyện nhiều kiểu chữ khác nhau. Kiên trì luyện tập trong mấy năm, nét chữ của anh mỗi ngày một đẹp hơn. Ông đã nổi tiếng khắp cả nước là một người viết hay.
