The exact date changes from year to year. Vietnamese people usually make preparations for the holiday several weeks beforehand. They tidy their houses, cook special food, clean and make offerings on the family altars. On the New Year’s Eve, people sit up to midnight to see New Year in, then they put on new clothes and give one another the greetings of the season. Tet lasts ten days. The first three days are the most important. Vietnamese people believe that how people act during those days will influence the whole year. As a result, they make every effort to avoid arguments and smile as much as possible.

III. Read the text, then decide whether the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

Located in DuyXuyen district, Quang Nam province, about 69km from Da Nang City and 20km from TraKieu ancient capital, My Son Sanctuary is the complex of numerous Champa tower-temples in a valley roughly two kilometers wide, surrounded by two mountain ranges. This used to be a site of religious ceremony for kings of the ruling dynasties of Champa, as well as a burial place for Cham royalty and national heroes.

My Son Sanctuary is regarded as one of the main religious centers of Hinduism in Southeast Asia and is the foremost heritage site of this nature in Vietnam. Notably, among 225 Cham vestiges that are founded in Vietnam, My Son possesses 71 monuments and 32 epitaphs, the content of which is still being studied. My Son Sanctuary is often compared with other historical temple complexes in Southeast Asia, such as Borobudur of Java in Indonesia, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Bagan of Myanmar or Ayutthaya in Thailand.

My Son Sanctuary was honored as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites at the 23rdsession of the World Heritage Committee in 1999. Based on architectural remains, My Son perhaps began construction in 4th century. It is perhaps the longest inhabited archaeological site in Indochina. Although time and wars have turned numerous tower-temples into ruins, sculptural artifacts and architectural remains still reflected golden age of Cham fine arts history. These masterpieces have marked flourishing periods of Champa culture and architecture as well as in Southeast Asia.

1.   My Son Sanctuary dates from the 4th century.

2.   My Son Sanctuary is located in a valley surrounded by mountains.

3.   It can be seen that My Son Sanctuary is a centre of culture and politics of Champa Kingdom at the present time.

4.   My Son Sanctuary can’t be compared to Angkor Wat, Bagan, and Borobudur.

5.   Some tower-temples of the My Son Sanctuary were destroyed by wars and time.

6.   My Son sanctuary is still considered as one of the most excellent achievement of the art of sculptures and architecture in Champa Kingdom.

Mid-Autumn Festival

In Viet Nam, Tet Trung Thu or the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most popular family holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the August lunar month. Vietnamese families plan their activities around their children on this special day. In a Vietnamese folklore, parents were working so hard to prepare for the harvest that they left the children playing by themselves. To make up for lost time, parents would use the Mid-Autumn Festival as an opportunity to, show their love and appreciation for their children. Appropriately the Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the Children’s Festival. In the United States, this tradition continues in many Vietnamese - American communities. Trung Thu activities are often centered on children and education. Parents buy lanterns for their children so that they can participate in a candlelit lantern procession at dawn. Lanterns represent brightness while the procession symbolizes success in school. Vietnamese markets sell a variety of lanterns, but the most popular children’s lantern is the star lantern. Other children’s activities include arts and crafts in Which children make face masks and lanterns. Children also perform traditional Vietnamese dances for adults and participate in contests for prizes and scholarships. Unicorn dancers are also very popular in Trung Thu festivities.

Like the Chinese, Vietnamese parents tell their children fairy tales and serve mooncakes and other special treats under the silvery moon. A favorite folklore is about a carp that wanted to become a dragon. The carp worked and worked and eventually transformed itself into a dragon. This is the story-behind the mythical symbol, Cá Hóa Rồng. Parents use this story to encourage their children to work hard so that they can become whomever they want to be.

1. In Viet Nam, the Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of every month.

2. To make up for lost time, parents would use the Mid-Autumn Festival as an opportunity to show their love and appreciation for their children.
