Around the age of sixteen, you must make one of the biggest decisions of your life. “Do I stay on at school and hopefully go on to university course? Do I leave and start work or begin a training worth?” The decision is yours, but it may be worth remembering two things: there is more unemployment among those who haven’t been to university, and people who have the right skills will have a big advantage in the competition for jobs. If you decide to go straight into a job, there are many opportunities for training. Getting qualifications will help you to get on more quickly in many careers, and evening classes allow you to learn while you earn. Starting work and taking a break to study when you are older is another possibility. In this way, you can save up money for your student days, as well as getting practical work experience.

We are staying in the most modern hotel I have (21) _____ seen. It’s large and cool, and many people think it’s the best hotel on the island. It’s (22) _____ more comfortable than any of the other hotels, and it’s even bigger than the world famous Belton Hotel. The nearest beach is (23) _____ than a hundred meters away, and so we can go swimming a lot. It’s really good, and I (24) _____ wish you (25) _____ here.

Love,

Mike

Dear Kate,

Dave and I are having (16) _____ best holiday of our lives! We are in Barbados, one of the (17) _____ islands in the Caribbean. Although it is (18) _____ smaller than Jamaica, there seems to be more to do than in Jamaica. (19) _____, the people here seem (20) _____ friendlier than those on the other islands. We are staying in the most modern hotel I have (21) _____ seen. It’s large and cool, and many people think it’s the best hotel on the island. It’s (22) _____ more comfortable than any of the other hotels, and it’s even bigger than the world famous Belton Hotel. For questions (1 - 8), read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap. There is an example at the beginning (0).

                                                                                                      BLUE DIAMONDS

Blue diamonds are the world’s most expensive diamonds, with some valued (0) ...... AT....... over 350 million US dollars. However, no one knew (1) ............... recently precisely where these rare stones came from.

Most diamonds are formed from pure carbon under extreme heat 150 to 200 kilometers underground, and (2) ............... is thought that volcanic eruptions bring them to the earth’s surface. Research by scientists has revealed, however, that blue diamonds were probably formed somewhere (3) ............... 600 and 800 kilometers down, in a part of the earth’s interior known (4) ............... the lower mantle.

These researchers analyzed 46 blue diamonds, all of (5) .............. contained minerals only found in the lower mantle. (6) .............. only were these stones formed four times nearer the earth’s core (7) ............... normal diamonds, but they also contain an element called boron that is mostly found on the earth’s surface. What seems to have happened, (8) ............... to the researchers, is that billions of years ago, rocks containing boron were carried down into the lower mantle by movements of the earth’s tectonic plates, and were eventually returned to the surface by volcanic action.
