I. Reading the passage

We are Khmer Krom, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the south of Vietnam. We live by farming – mostly rice – and fishing on the Mekong River. Life is sometimes hard as our work depends heavily on the weather. When it is not harvest time, the men of the village go fishing from early morning and don’t return until late afternoon. By the time they return, most of the village women will be waiting for them on the river bank. They wait to buy the fish, which they will later sell at the local market or bring to the nearby town for a higher price. We children will be there too. We love running around the beach and waiting for the boats to come in.

Our most important festival of the year is the Chol Chnam Thmay, which celebrates the New Year. It falls in mid-April. Every family tries to prepare well for the festive activities. The community also visits and helps poor families so that everybody has a happy New Year.

Space exploration is much too expensive and the money should be spent on more important things. What is your opinion?

It's often argued that space exploration is too expensive and the money should be spent on more important things. This essay disagrees with that suggestions completely because of the benefits space exploration brings to the people. The essay will first look at how space exploration has effected in our life and then discuss how it would help the human in the future.
First of all, a plethora of technologies we are using nowadays was invented based on space research. The scientists launch the satellite into space. Then they will the information from it to work out new ideas. For example, we can see roads, houses, restaurants, schools,.e.t.c on the Google Map very clearly. It's because the satellites send photos they have taken to the centre on the Earth. This helps me a lot because I often feel arduous while try to find the correct road.
Furthermore, the population of the world is increasing day by day. This is the reason why we should find out a new planet that we can live in. I think this is quite possible and this will affect a lot in our life. For instance, finding a new planet that we can live in can decrease some problems which are caused by high population such as the traffic jam, the pollution and there is not enough food, job and houses for people today.
In recapitulation, space exploration should be improved to make further technologies and solve the serious problem on the Earth that we are facing.

It is well known that the building development company Cityspace wants to knock down the existing seafront sports club in Layton and replace it with a leisure centre that will consist of a multi-screen cinema, restaurants and an entertainment centre. But a local action group has promised to fight the £30 million redevelopment of the sports club, which has provided family facilities for over 25 years.
The action group was set up three weeks after the project was announced. Members of the group
argue that the new centre will be too big and will totally change the way the town looks. They also
dislike the removal of sports facilities from the centre and the change to less healthy activities such
as video games and films. Apart from the size of the project, they say that the 550 parking spaces
provided will be too few and parking will become more difficult as a result.
Local hotel owners have welcomed the project, but the action group says that in general it will only
have a bad effect on the neighbourhood. According to one group member it will result in up to 4,000
people being around Layton seafront late at night. ‘A lot of old people and families live nearby,’ he
explained. A meeting is being held tonight to discuss the plans.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks.

A trend that has emerged recently is the sharing of childcare (1) __________ between husband and wife. Young couples will try to arrange their work schedules so that they work opposite hours or shifts in order that one parent is always home with the children. Since childcare is expensive, this saves money for the young couple trying to establish themselves and provide a secure environment for the family. Husband and wife may also share household chores. Some fathers are just as capable as mothers at cooking dinner, changing and bathing the baby, and doing the laundry.

In some cases, the woman’s salary is for family (2)__________ and the father becomes the “househusband." These cases are still fairly rare. One positive trend, however, is that fathers seem to be spending more time with their children. In a recent survey, 41% of the children sampled said they spend equal time with their mothers and fathers. “This is one of our most significant cultural changes,” says Dr. Leon Hoffman, who co-directs the Parent Child Center at the New York Psychoanalytic Society. In practice, for over 30 years, Hoffman has found "a very dramatic difference in the involvement of the father in everything from care-taking to general decision (3)__________ around kids' lives.”

Another factor has recently been added to the childcare formula. The number of people who work from home nearly full-time rose 23% from the last decade. The (4)_________ of technology - computers, faxes, teleconferencing - has made it easier for at-home workers to be constantly in touch. Will this new flexibility in the workforce bring a positive change for the (5)__________ of children? Only time will tell.
