Mạo từ THE/A/AN là những từ thường dùng nhất trong tiếng trong tiếng Anh. Có hai loại mạo từ: mạo từ xác định the và mạo từ không xác định a/an

Mạo từ xác định (definite article) THE được dùng khi người nói và người nghe/người đọc đều biết họ đang nói cụ thể về một ai hay vật gì. Ngoài ra the còn được dùng trong những trường hợp sau:

Mạo từ không xác định (indefinite article) A/AN được dùng khi người nói và người nghe/người đọc nói về một ai hay vật gì chung chung và không cụ thể. A được dùng trước phụ âm, còn AN được dùng trước nguyên âm a e i o u hay phụ âm có âm câm (an hour, an honor). Ngoài ra the còn được dùng trong những trường hợp sau:
