STORM CHASER

Most people run away from tornadoes, but Roger Hill runs toward them. He is a “storm chaser.” He takes photos of storms. He has photos of more than 650 tornadoes!

Hill runs a company called Silver Lining Tours. His company organizes trips for people who want to see tornadoes. He spends about four months every year traveling. He travels all over the United States looking for tornadoes. He finds them by checking the Internet for weather information. When he finds a storm, he starts driving toward it. His company’s cars have special equipment to help him follow the storms.

Whenever he's chasing and photographing tornadoes, Hill knows he needs to be safe. He says you can get close to a tornado and take a picture. However, if you make a mistake, it can kill you. So in a way, it’s like a photographer trying to take photos of grizzly bears. Before taking a photograph, you need to be ready and to have an escape route. Safety is really important!

A newspaper makes it money from the price people pay for it and also from
the advertisings it carries. A popular newspaper with a circulation of over five
millions daily does a lot of money. Less seriously newspapers are probably read just
for entertainment. They have big headings above the new stories, funny cartoons to
look at and sensational photos of violent. The gossip columns are full of stories of
private live of famous people. No one takes the political views of such papers
seriously. On an other hand, in a free country where there is no censorship, serious
newspapers are read principle for their news, sent to themselves by their
correspondents around the world and by the big news agencies. People also read
these newspapers for their revisions of new books, films and plays and for the
editorials what represent the opinion of the newspaper itself about the important
events and issues of the moment.

THAM KHẢO Ạ:

The National Day 2/9 is the speacial day of our country. All of people are joyful, glad and have a lot of exciting plans like as : visitting Uncle’s Ho moselium, going to the movie theater or places of entertainment ... I just had a interesting trip in the Bat Trang pottery village on that day. But It must took two hours to go from here to there, therefore that juorney really made me very tired. We leaved at 6.30 am. It may be quite early. Because when we arrived there, a few stores still hadn’t opened yet. Finally we decided to go to the pottery nearly. Making pottery is the work which requires cleverness and creation. At the first time when I have seen the potters rotate the throwing and make potteries by their hand, I did think that it’s very simple to put the clay body on the turntable of throwing then control of your hand cleverly to create the shape you want. but I were wrong, in fact, if you‘re only careless a little your pottery’ll be out of shape. What a pity! I also tried to make a cup myself and it had never finished. In the pottery, I sudden heard a sound “ Hi! Are you PTIT?” I looked up realizing that sound of Leo( another member of ELFs). That is real a interesting amazement in my trip. We had talked to each other happily. After an hour, we went to paint statues. There were a lot of people like this art game. I must tried so much to get a sit and choose a statue I like best. Almost people concentraded all their mind on painting so much that they didn’t know everything around them. I chose a lovely frog. It seems to be quite like the one in my inventory of our forum. I painted it as carefullly as posssible. How hard the choice of colours was!. Eventualy, I made up my mind to paint the body’s frog in the green; the feet and hands in yellow, the mounth in red; the cheek in white and had more some red dots. Wao! I thought it was very cute!. I like it so much!. If you see it, you ‘ll certainly like it as me.When we came back the the Bat Trang pottery market. There were a lot of people there. Most of the stores always crowed with buyers. The ceramic wares there were very plentiful and multiform which attractted the attention of domestic customs as well as international customs. With me the imperessional potteries were ceramic pictures, vases, bracelets, belt, ear-ring…and a lot of art statues which I had never seen before. There were many cute and lovely ceramic wares suitable of the girls. So It seems the girls like shopping there rather than the boys. I also bought a few lovely things made me pleasure. Speacial I bought a vase and a bundle of beautiful-decorated chopticks for my mother . I ‘m sure she ‘ll like it.About 2 pm, we took a bus and come back home. That was a wonderful day. I’ll remember that interesting trip forever.

B.  Read the text carefully, then do the tasks.

People visiting Spain for the first time can find it difficult to get used to the eating customs of the Spanish. It’s not so much the food itself, but the timing of the meals that visitors aren’t used to. I used to live in Cadiz myself for a few years and I actually quite like the way they do things. Breakfast is a light continental affair – just a roll and some coffee usually – eaten between 8 and 9.30 a.m. The main meal of the day is lunch, which people usually eat sometime between 1.30 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. Quite a few of the shops, museums and galleries close around this time, because the locals like to take time over lunch. They will rest for a short time afterwards, although the traditional afternoon siesta is not as common as it used to be. People eat late in the evening – rarely before 9 p.m. and at the weekend the locals often won’t eat before 11 p.m. or even midnight. This is a much lighter meal than lunch – often just a few tapas taken with a drink.

      A. breakfast                B. lunch                       C. snack                      D. dinner

4.   What is a continental breakfast?

      A. a full breakfast of cereal, bacon and eggs and toast. B. a traditional breakfast consisting of rice, soup, fish

      C. a simple breakfast consisting of coffee and bread       D. a healthy breakfast of fruits, veggies and milk

5.   According to the passage, _________.

      A. Spaniards don’t often eat their evening meal any time before 9 pm.  B. Dinner is also as large as lunch

      C. Dinner is always served with tapas and wine.             D. The locals usually eat dinner after 11pm

Urban Farming

Mario Wezel is a German photographer who takes photos for National Geographic. Mario is interested in urban farming, so many of his photos show farmers and gardeners. However, urban farming is different from traditional farming. It's when people farm and garden in the middle of the city.

Mario traveled to urban farms all over the US. In Boston, one man has bees on the roof of the Lenox Hotel. The hotel uses honey from the bees in its restaurant. In San Francisco, there's a small farm next to the Giants' baseball stadium. When people watch the game, they can also buy sandwiches from the farm with fresh vegetables! And in Washington, D.C., volunteers can help in a garden at the White House.

For Mario, the most surprising urban farm is at San Quentin State Prison, in California. The prison has a garden and, once a week, prisoners can take a gardening class. They learn how to grow plants and flowers. Working in the garden is also therapeutic.

Mario's photos are all of the US, but you can find urban farms in a lot of different countries and large cities, such as Tokyo, Lima, and Perth. That's because about 3.5 billion people (half the world's population) live in cities today and they want fresh, healthy food. And more and more people think urban farming is the answer to the world's food shortages, as well as to making our cities greener and more relaxing.

Most volcanoes are found along an imaginary belt, called the Ring of Fire, that encircles the Pacific Ocean. However, volcanic activity takes place in many far-flung regions of the world such as Hawaii, Iceland, Europe, and even the floor of the earth’s oceans. The leading theory as to why volcanic activity, as well as earthquakes, takes place when and where it does is called the theory of “plate tectonics”. The theory holds that the outer shell of the earth is divided into many different rigid sections of rock, called plates. These plates are not static, they are in continuous motion over a layer of partly melted rock. While their movement may appear insignificant, at only several inches per year, it is not. Indeed, the collisions between plates caused by this almost imperceptible movement can have catastrophic consequences. Volcanic activity and earthquakes are concentrated near the boundaries of these giant, moving plates.

The majority of volcanoes are formed at te point where two plates collide. One of the plates is forced underneath the other. As the plate sinks, the earth’s heat and the friction of the movement cause a portion of the sinking plate to melt. This melted portion of plate is called magma, and when it reaches the earth’s surface it becomes a volcano. Volcanoes can also be created when two plates begin to diverge. Then, magma from below the earth’s crust moves up to fill the void between the two plates. Large quantities of lava spill out from the void. Volcanoes of this type usually are found not on land, but on the ocean floor. In extreme instances this can lead to the formation of gigantic, sunken mountain ranges like Mid-Atlantic Ridge that spans nearly the entire length of the Atlantic Ocean. The theory of plate tectonics also explains why some volcanic activity takes place so far from any known plate boundaries. Basically, these volcanoes are the result of huge column of magma, or plumes, that rise up and break through the surface of the earth.

 The Ring of Fire is_________.

B. The place where the highest concentration of volcanoes is found.
