BEASTS IN PROFILE
Read the descriptions on the following page and draw each of the monsters in the boxes
next to them, or in your notebook:

Beast #1
The beast was as tall as an elephant. It was covered in thick, red fur. I was amazed that
its fur was red, such a bright red. Mesmerised, I caught sight of a tail as sharp as a blade. I gasped when I saw its long,
sharp fangs. They were like samurai swords. I took a deep breath to calm down,
but the beast smelled horrible - the odour
could fill up two classrooms! When it moved it was as fast as a cheetah that had
just drank coffee.
Beast #2
With each step it took the ground shook.
The beast had two heads of different colours, one white and the other black. I
shivered when I saw its differently coloured
eyes. One head had eyes as red as blood,
while those on the other were a menacing,
icy blue. It had black wings with white claws that were as sharp as knives. The creature’s wings were silky and soft. Its flowing tail was a flaming ball of red and blue fire. The wild thing’s red legs were covered in scales.
Beast #3
I looked closely at the three red beady
eyes, and the mouth dripping with lava. I
could not believe how big it was! It was the
size of a rocket, with six arms sprouting
from its body! I couldn’t help but stare at
the murderous look in its red eyes. The monster had razor sharp black teeth and its
fur was striped black and orange. The claws were as green as lettuce. Its fingernails, yellow as the sun. I caught glimpses of its fangs. They could slice your hand off in one bite! The smell of the beast’s breath almost killed my dog. It smelled like garbage mixed with rotten eggs. The monster’s tail had sharp spikes pointing straight up at the ceiling.
Beast #4
I couldn't believe the strange creature
standing before me. It was at least as big as
a city bus. A faint, delicate smell of roses
came from the beast. I heard a sound rise
from its throat, a cross between a squeak
and growl. The eyes were a burning red. A
forked tongue shot out from between small, white, razor sharp fangs. The beast darted around as fast as lightning, its pointed claws tearing through the ground. Its upper body was the colour of sweet honey, including its head which resembled that of a horse, although it moved, and slashed like a panther. Finally, I saw its tail! A silver, glowing snake.

STAYING HEALTHY IN SPACE
The range of foods available to astronauts is vast, and great care is taken to ensure that it looks and smells appetizing. Meals are organized to provide an average of 3,000 calories a day, which seems high for living in an enclosed environment in which there is no gravity. But astronauts can expend a great deal of energy in doing the simplest things. For example, if they try to turn a handle, they turn themselves as well. If they bend down to do up a shoelace, (1) ________. Finding unusual ways of doing such ordinary things uses up the excess calories. The space diet is balanced rather differently from a terrestrial diet. This is to try and compensate for changes that take place in the body during space flight. Bodily changes begin as soon as astronauts go into space (2) _______________Among the most serious is calcium loss, which causes a marked reduction in the mass and strength of bones. There is also a progressive loss of red blood cells. What causes these effects is not known, (3)  ______________ The heart muscles, with no gravity to battle against, start to waste away. The leg muscles start to waste away too, since walking, as done on Earth, (4) _______________ Exercise also helps to reduce muscle wastage (5) _____________ No one yet knows the limit of human endurance in space. If astronauts can withstand two years or more of continuous weightlessness, the mankind’s dream of visiting other planets could become reality in the early decades of the next century.
A. can only be done if astronauts put on their heavy spacesuits
B. and will never be known
C. which is rather more than astronauts really need
D. and are quite noticeable after even a week
E. they start turning somersaults
F. and is vital on very long flights
G. and the question must be answered before long-duration space-flight is really safe

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following question from 44 to 50.

The rules of etiquette in American restaurants depend upon a number of factors the physical location of the restaurant, e.g., rural or urban; the type of restaurant, e.g., informal or formal; and certain standards that are more universal. In other words, some standards 5 of etiquette vary significantly while other standards apply almost anywhere. Learning the proper etiquette in a particular type of restaurant in a particular area may sometimes require instruction, but more commonly it simply requires sensitivity and experience. For example, while it is acceptable to read a magazine in a coffee shop, it is 10 inappropriate to do the same in a more luxurious setting. And, if you are eating in a very rustic setting it may be fine to tuck your napkin into your shirt, but if you are in a sophisticated urban restaurant this behavior would demonstrate a lack of manners. It is safe to say, however, that in virtually every restaurant it is unacceptable 15 to indiscriminately throw your food on the floor. The conclusion we can most likely draw from the above is that while the types and locations of restaurants determine etiquette appropriate to them, some rules apply to all restaurants.

Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “tuck” in line 11?

A. set

B. put

C. fold

D. hold
