Read the descriptions on the following page and draw each of the monsters in the boxes

Beast #1
The beast was as tall as an elephant. It was covered in thick, red fur. I was amazed that
its fur was red, such a bright red. Mesmerised, I caught sight of a tail as sharp as a blade. I gasped when I saw its long,
sharp fangs. They were like samurai swords. I took a deep breath to calm down,
but the beast smelled horrible - the odour
could fill up two classrooms! When it moved it was as fast as a cheetah that had
just drank coffee.
Beast #2
With each step it took the ground shook.
The beast had two heads of different colours, one white and the other black. I
shivered when I saw its differently coloured
eyes. One head had eyes as red as blood,
while those on the other were a menacing,
icy blue. It had black wings with white claws that were as sharp as knives. The creature’s wings were silky and soft. Its flowing tail was a flaming ball of red and blue fire. The wild thing’s red legs were covered in scales.
Beast #3
I looked closely at the three red beady
eyes, and the mouth dripping with lava. I
could not believe how big it was! It was the
size of a rocket, with six arms sprouting
from its body! I couldn’t help but stare at
the murderous look in its red eyes. The monster had razor sharp black teeth and its
fur was striped black and orange. The claws were as green as lettuce. Its fingernails, yellow as the sun. I caught glimpses of its fangs. They could slice your hand off in one bite! The smell of the beast’s breath almost killed my dog. It smelled like garbage mixed with rotten eggs. The monster’s tail had sharp spikes pointing straight up at the ceiling.
Beast #4
I couldn't believe the strange creature
standing before me. It was at least as big as
a city bus. A faint, delicate smell of roses
came from the beast. I heard a sound rise
from its throat, a cross between a squeak
and growl. The eyes were a burning red. A
forked tongue shot out from between small, white, razor sharp fangs. The beast darted around as fast as lightning, its pointed claws tearing through the ground. Its upper body was the colour of sweet honey, including its head which resembled that of a horse, although it moved, and slashed like a panther. Finally, I saw its tail! A silver, glowing snake.

The four seasons in Britain are very different. Read about what Daniel and Fiona think about winter, spring, summer and autumn.

Daniel

Autumn is very beautiful time of the year. The leaves on the trees go brown, red and yellow and they go down. I love to watch it! We play in the parks a lot but we wear warm clothes, because the days get cold. School starts again in autumn, at the beginning of September. I don’t like school!

Summer is the time for me! School finishes in July and we can play in the parks all the time. Sometimes it is very hot. People are happier and they talk with their friends and go for a walk more. The days are very long. In July, for example, it gets dark only about 10 o’clock. It’s very difficult to go to sleep at night! Fiona

It’s very cold in winter! Sometimes, we have a lot of snow and we can make snowmen. I don’t like winter because we can’t go for a walk very much. We wear thick clothes and in our house it sometimes gets cold. When we come home from school at 4 o’clock, it is already dark. I don’t like it at all! But there is one good thing about winter - Christmas!

After the long winter, spring is great! There are new leaves on the trees and the birds start to sing.

We can go for long walks again and play in the park. The days are longer and it doesn’t get dark until about six o’clock. It’s much warmer but it rains a lot and the days are very windy.

THE FIRST ELECTRIC TRAFFIC LIGHTS

In the early 1900's,the world was developing at a very rapid pace, and with the
growth of industrialization, cities became more crowded. Furthermore, with the invention
automobiles, the traffic on the roads increased significantly, so there was a need for a
better traffic system.

In 1912, an American policeman, Lester Wire, who was concerned with the
increasing traffic, came up with the idea of the first electric traffic light.Based on Wire's
design, the lights were first installed in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 5,1914, at the corner
of 105th and Euclid Avenue

The first electric traffic light had only red and green lights; it did not have a
yellow light like modern- day traffic signals.Instead of a yellow light, it had a buzzer
sound that was used to indicate that the signal would be changing soon.

In the year 1920, a policeman named William Potts in Detroit, Michigan
invented the first four-way and three-coloured traffic lights. Apart from red and green, a
third colour - amber (or yellow) - was introduced. Detroit became the first city to
implement the four-way and three-colored traffic lights. In the 1920's,several automated
traffic signals were installed in major cities around the world. The modern traffic light
still uses this famous T-shaped model with three different colors.

The hunters used groups of dogs to chase the foxes while they followed on horses. They wore special clothes for hunting: bright jackets-usually red – black boots and black hats. This tradition continued through the 1800s and 1900s, especially in rural areas. However, many people in the UK were unhappy about the tradition of fox-hunting. It was especially unpopular among people who lived in cities. They thought it was a cruel and out-dated activity and argued that it is wrong to kill animals for fun. On September 15th, 2004, the government 2 made a new law to ban hunting with dogs. The traditional fox hunts had to stop. They were now illegal.
