My name is Tsukasa Richard Nakai. I am 33-years-old and I am an avid Star Wars fan! My favorite character is Darth Vader. I’m currently involved in the Best Buddies Friendship Program, Ambassador Program, and the Jobs Program.

I’ve been part of the Best Buddies chapter at UCLA since February 2017 and I am currently their Buddy Director. I’ve been an ambassador since March 2017, and through the Jobs Program, I now work as a part-time employee in the Best Buddies California State Office as an administrative assistant… I love it!

My life before joining Best Buddies was one of self-loathing. In October 2000, I had been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. I had never fully accepted who I was as a person and I was always very self-critical. Despite my achievements, including becoming a published author and a college graduate, I would never praise myself or give myself a kind word. The one person who helped me on my journey of self-acceptance was one of my colleagues, Tori Braden. When she was Chapter President at UCLA, she asked me if I wanted to become an Ambassador.  I replied, YES! — thinking that I wouldn’t get asked to do too much, but I was mistaken!

One month after I participated in the Ambassador Training at UCLA, the Program Supervisor of our area called me and asked me if I wanted to do a speaking engagement for one of our sponsors at the Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle! It wasn’t until I started interning at Best Buddies state office in California, that I found out Tori had advocated on my behalf. This was unusual; we barely knew each other, but she took a huge risk on me and it paid off for both of us.

White cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy in the Second World War and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too. But it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt really popular: actors Marlon Brando and James Dean wore classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). After these films, every young man wanted to wear one.

Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film about de souffle (breathless), American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt advertising an English language newspaper. This started a new fashion in T-shirts for women, but it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that companies like Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as ‘walking advertisements’.

1. In the 1940s, white T-shirts were part of a uniform.

2. T-shirts became more popular because of two 1950s American films.

3. Many women were wearing T-shirts in 1955

4. By 1960, companies were using T-shirts to advertise their products.

Having a penfriend is an excellent way for students to practice their English. This can either be done the old fashioned way by sending the letter through the post office or by e-mail using the internet. Penfriends are good as the students are communicating with people in real situations.
They feel good when they ask their penfriend a question and then a few days later receive a reply. It also supports their confidence when they see that their American or English penfriend has similar difficulty with spelling and grammar! This page gives ideas of what to write in the first few letters and you will also find links to read real letters from students around the world.
It is always good to end your first letter by saying that you thank them for their time and that you wish them the best even if they do not wish to correspond to you. You should never make your new penpals feel obligated to reply to your letter. They will reply if they want to and do not need to be told that you "look forward to hearing from them soon" or "I will be most disappointed if I do not receive a reply". Comments like this will have no positive effects.
Choose true or false
29. Write for a pen pal is one of the best ways for you to learn English.
30. People feel confident when they contact with ones who have the same problem. 31. Whatever you write, please end your first letter by saying thank
32. It is polite when you say “ I will be most disappointed if I do not receive a reply”
Choose the most suitable item.

33. What does the word” obligated” mean?
A. pleased B. confused C. compelled D. corresponded
34. According to the passage, real friends or pen friends have to the share and ________. A. instruction B. volunteer C. understanding D. impression
