I had been happily working in the same company as a graphics designer for over ten years, so it came as a huge surprise when one day, without warning I was made redundant. In fact, most of the people in my department lost their jobs that day. When the personnel manager gave me the bad news, she explained that the company had been taken over by a big multinational corporation that was demanding a lot of changes. So, one day I was in a comfortable job with a generous salary and plenty of annual leave and the next day I was unemployed. While it was nice to have time on my hands, I knew I would have to find a job fairly quickly. I soon found out that it wasn't so easy. No one was taking on new staff. Every morning I searched the Classified Ads, but there was nothing suitable, not even part-time positions.
Finally, a friend asked me if I was interested in helping out in her new cake shop. She needed somebody to deal with customers and to help her with the cake designs. At first, she could only pay me by the hour at rather a low hourly rate. To my surprise, I love the work.
I've been a cake designer for three years now. I'm so glad I didn't turn down my friend's job offer. We have so much work and now I'm no longer an employee. My friend and I are now partners in the best cake shop in town.

When I first started learning English ten years ago, I could not hardly say a word – ‘hello’, ‘thank you’ was just about it! I went to class two evenings a week and I was surprised at how quick I made progress. During the course, we learned lots of vocabularies and studied grammar rules. The thing I enjoyed most was able to practice to speak with the other older students in my class. Two years lately, I went to England to study at a language school. It was Cambridge. I did a three-weeks course at a very good school and I stayed with a local family.  It was a fantastic experience and I picked out lot of new languages from speaking with my host family and with other students from all in the world. I really improved my pronunciation as well.  When I got back to Spain, I was much more confident. I could actually held a conversation with my teacher in English.

The 1990s

In January 1990, I was at primary school and in January 2000, I was at university! I left primary school in September 1990 and went to a secondary school five kilometres from my house. I took the bus every day at 7.30am and didn't get home until 5 o'clock in the evening. What a difficult life!

My family bought a satellite TV in 1990 and a new video the next year. In 1994, my brother bought a computer and I got a bicycle the same year.

I left my school in 1997 but decided not to go to university like most people: instead, I went walking in France alone for three months and then drove around America for three months with my brother. For the first six months of 1998, I got a job in a health food shop and then went to university in October 1998 in Wales.
