Nowadays, large cities are becoming more and more inhabited. The majority of the population prefer living in a big town mainly because of the great advantages it has compared to living in the countryside. However, what are the benefits of this situation, and what are the drawbacks? In this essay, I will explore the pros and cons of living in a large city and try to draw some conclusions.

Let’s start looking at the advantages. One of the main positives of a big town is the large amount of shops available in every corner of the city. What I mean by this is that whenever you live, there are some useful stores like supermarkets, banks, tobacconists and clothing stores where you can easily buy everything you need without going to the city center. Secondly, living in a big town is a big challenge for evening parties. In London, for example, there are so many things to do in the evenings like going to the cinema, to the pub or to the park during the summer period.

Turning to the other side of the argument, traffic could be one of the major disadvantages of living in a big city. Many people take the car everyday and it has also been proved that the majority of the families have at least two cars. This means that you have to deal with rush-hour traffic on your way to work and on your way back. In addition, in a big town there is consequently a lot of smog and this can really affect people’s health.

To sum up, living in a big city has great advantages but also some significant negatives. You have to weigh up to the pros of enjoying evenings’ nights outside and the availability of many shops and the cons of cope with smog and traffic issues. Personally, I believe that the benefits of enjoying the city-life and the comfort of having shops at every corner, eventually overweigh the negatives.

There are two kinds of energy in our life. They are renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. The non-renewable energy sources include oil, coal, natural gas,... The renewable energy sources include wind, solar, biogas, hydro,... Therefore, we should use more renewable energy than non-renewable ones in the future, because the non-renewable energy sources produce a lot of carbon dioxide. That's bad for the environment, and these energy sources are going to run out soon. The renewable energy sources are abundant, cheap, clean and they're eco-friendly. They will last forever.

Renewable energy comes from a source that will not deplete. Two common examples of this type of energy are solar power and wind power. Geothermal power, hydropower, biomass, and tidal power are additional forms of renewable energy that produce power for our planet right now.

The primary advantage of renewable energy is that fewer potentially harmful emissions are released into the atmosphere. Although fossil fuels are used to create the products that allow for this power to be produced, most forms of renewable energy can become carbon neutral in 5 years or less.

The disadvantage of renewable energy is that it can be costly. Although wind power and solar power have become cost-competitive with coal-fired power and nuclear power in some communities, some forms are not cost-competitive globally yet when the cost per kilowatt hour is compared. In 2015, the lifetime cost per kilowatt hour of conventional coal was 9.5 cents, while the cost of offshore wind was 15.8 cents.

There are additional advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy to consider as well.

Solar energy captured by solar panels is a limitless form of energy, as the earth is bombarded with extreme amounts of solar energy every day, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It's also clean, producing no carbon dioxide, and is very low-maintenance, since solar panels have no moving parts.

Unfortunately, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory says its high installation cost makes it up to four times more expensive than the cost of electricity from a standard utility company. For optimal operation and maximum energy production, it requires year-round sunny weather and is very expensive if repair is necessary, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Renewable energy describes a collection of energy technologies i.e. solar, wind, geothermal derived from sources that are never-ending and can be replenished time after time. Most countries across the world heavily depend on fossil fuels (oil, coal andnatural gas) as sources of energy to power their economies.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable forms of energy, meaning, they utilize limited resources that will ultimately deplete, hence, driving up overall energy costs. These very countries have responded to the threat by stepping up campaigns to embrace renewable forms of energy like solar and wind

When you flip on a light switch, the energy that brightens your light bulb may come from one of several potential energy sources. Different energy sources have varying advantages and disadvantages that don't just affect your utility bill but that may also have a global impact on air quality and environmental degradation.

Wind Energy

Giant wind turbines have begun to appear across North America. As wind hits the turbines, they begin to spin, and the resulting spin generates electricity that can power businesses, homes and other outfits. It provides energy without emitting greenhouse gas emissions. It's also very low-cost in the long run, as the U.S. Department of Energy estimates it to be one of the cheapest forms of renewable energy available, and it's inexhaustible as well.

However, some anti-wind activists argue that wind turbines are ugly, noisy, and dangerous to local bird species that may fly into the turbines, according to Middlebury Schools.

Solar Energy

Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels like coal and oil are the most widely-used energy source in the world. It's typically the most plentiful, easily accessible and cheapest form of energy, according to Iowa Public Television.

However, Southern Polytechnic State University warns that fossil fuels are limited and will run out one day. Fossil fuels also endanger the environment due to the mining process and the greenhouse gas emissions produced while burning the fuel. Additionally, they may contribute to harmful side effects like air pollution and acid rain.

Biofuels

Biofuels are made from corn, sugarcane and other crops. Ethanol, widely used as a gasoline additive for powering cars, is a biofuel. It's renewable, grown domestically for greater energy security, and often produces less greenhouse gas emissions when burned, according to the National Center for Environmental Economics.

Unfortunately, growing the crops needed for biofuel may pollute the earth's soil and waterways due to farming processes and side effects like fertilizer runoff. Using crops for fuel may also use up vital food crops, and this can drive up global food prices.
