A hobby can be almost anything that a person likes to do in his free time. Hobbyists raise pets, watch birds or hunt animals. They also climb the mountains, go fishing, go skating, or go swimming. They also paint pictures, attend concerts and play musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from shells to stamps.

People have hobbies because these activities bring enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation. Sometimes, they can bring financial profits. Hobbies also bring interesting activities for people who have retired. People, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby regardless of their age, position, or income. Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are useful in helping patients who suffer from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give these patients activities to do, and provide interests that prevent them from thinking about themselves.

"What usually happens to criminals? In the UK, when the police catch criminals. They go to court and then they usually go to prison. However in New Zealand they have a different system for young people who break the law, the system comes from the Maori people. They were the first inhabitants of New Zealand and they have ancient and respected traditions. They understand that crime hurts many people: the victim, the victim's family, the criminal's family and the criminal too. In Maori society, when a young person breaks the law, the community has a meeting, the people who are affected by the crime sit down together and talk about the situation. In this way, young criminals understand the effects of their actions. They have to meet the person who they have hurt. For example teenagers who have been in a fight have to face each other again and talk about the problem. In the meetings, families decide what the young offender must do in order to compensate their victims. One of the most important things that the offender has to do is apologise to the victim. This is a very difficult and uncomfortable thing for most young offenders to do. If a teenager steals something from a classmate, the community asks him or her to say sorry to the classmate, Most young people say this is the hardest thing to do. The Maori system helps young people to change their behaviour, it tries to bring something positive from a negative situation, and most of the time it succeeds."

Do you think the Maori system is a good idea? Why?/ Why not?

Do you think the Maori system is a good idea? Why?/ Why not?

=> Yes , I do. Because it helps young people to change their behaviour, it tries to bring something positive from a negative situation, and most of the time it succeeds.

I think the Maori system is a good idea because it can educate young people without violence. That way won't give any bad memory to the youth. The youth will learn how to say sorry to other people. But some young wouldn't understand. They still think their actions are correct. Or because they don't afraid of saying sorry. They still do it after they have apologised. So I think Maori people should have a stricter system.

LIFE IN AN ISLAND

Off the west coast of Scotland, there are many small island communities. Life in these communities is very different from life in the big cities. People from the cities often say that life in the islands is slow and boring. But the island people tell a different story.

Many families live by fishing or farming, and people usually have more than one job. Many families have rooms for tourists who come to visit the islands in summer. The tourists go walking and fishing and play sports. Sometimes they study Gaelic, the local language. And they stay in a 'bed and breakfast' with a local family or in one of the small island hotels. In the long summer evenings, people meet and talk together. They tell stories of where they live and what they do.

The children on the islands go to small local schools. They have their classes in English and Gaelic. Sometimes there are only eight or ten children in one school! When they are twelve, they go to secondary school in a bigger town on the island. When they finish that school, they decide whether to go to university in a big city, or to stay and work on the island.

1. City people and island people have the same opinion about island life. ____

2. People on the islands mainly do one job. ____

3. Tourists can stay with local families in summer. ____

4. Children on the islands speak two languages at school. ____

5. Gaelic is the local language. ____

We would rather try to catch him and identify him before he steals the car, rather than have to chase him (endangering lives) after he steals it.

You should also call the cops about disturbing choices people make that can effect your quality of life. If someone puts their stereo on so loud it bothers you, you should go ask him to turn it down, and if he doesn't then call the cops. If there is a loud party next door and they keep waking you up, call the cops to make them turn down the noise or break up the party. Call in if you have drug dealing or prostitution in your neighborhood. You should not have to put up with that crap.

There are many ways to get your local cops to help you, that is what they are there for, you dont necessarily have to call. If it is an ongoing problem a letter or email to the chief will usually get the ball going. Or you can wave down an officer and tell them what the problem is, they are public servants that work for the citizens. A lot of serious crimes have been solved because a citizen passed along information to an officer.

Everyone has a number of acquaintances, but no one has many friends, for true friendship is not common, and there are many people who seem to be incapable of it. For a friendship to be close and lasting, both the friends must have some very special qualities.

The first quality is unselfishness. A person who is concerned only with his own interests and feelings cannot be a true friend. Friendship is a two-sided affair; it lives by give-and-take, and no friendship can last lone which is all give on one side and all take on the other.

Constancy is the second quality. Some people do not seem to be constant. They take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they are soon tired of it and feel the attraction of some new object. Such changeable and uncertain people are incapable of a lifelong friendship.

Loyalty is the third quality. Two friends must be loyal to each other, and they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicions between them. We do not think much of people who readily believe rumours and gossip about their friends. Those who are easily influenced by rumours can never be good friends.

Trust is perhaps the fourth quality. There must be mutual trust between friends, so that each can feel safe when telling the other his or her secrets. There are people who cannot keep a secret, either of their own or of others’. Such people will never keep a friend long.

Lastly, there must be a perfect sympathy between friends - sympathy with each other’s aims, likes, joys, sorrows, pursuits and pleasures. Where such mutual sympathy does not exist, friendship is impossible.

I cannot imagine living my life without my family by my side. Family is very important and valuable to me and is something that should never be taken for granted. Without my family, a large part of my life and culture would be missing.

Whether it’s my grandparent, my two sisters, my mom, or my dad, I know I can always count on someone to help me feel better. In fact, I think that this is probably the most important thing that my family has taught me; a family is made up of people who you can trust and who you can count on.

Too many times today, we read in the papers about families where parents abuse their children, verbally and physically. What these parents don’t realize is that they are either beginning or involving themselves in a vicious circle of hate in families. When parents abuse their children, they are telling their children that that is the way to raise children, and this is what their children learn. I was lucky, I have learned differently, because my family cares about me, and I care about them.

In this world of doubt, insecurity, and fear, my family is always there for me, holding their arms open to me with love. On the first day of first grade, I didn’t want to go to school, I had butterflies in my stomach and I found it difficult to walk because I was so nervous. The only reason that I finally went into the classroom is because my mom walked in with me, and promised me that as soon as school was out, she’d be there waiting for me, ready to bring me back to where I felt most comfortable, my family.

Luckily, I’m a little more grown up now; I can go into school by myself, and in a couple of years, when I go away to college, I’ll really have to go to school by myself. There will be no one who I will know at college. Of course I know I’ll make friends, but none of them will mean as much to me as my family does…..
