II. Read the passage carefully, and do the tasks that follow. Task 2: Read the passage again, and answer the questions below. The Voice The Voice is a two-time Emmy Award winning, the number one series on NBC, featuring the countrys best unknown artists and four of the biggest names in music as coaches.

The shows innovative format features five stages of competition: the first begins with the blind auditions, followed by the battle rounds, the knockouts, the live playoffs and finally, the live performance shows.

During the blind auditions, the decisions from the musician coaches are based solely on voice and not on looks. The coaches hear the artists perform, but they dont get to see them - thanks to rotating chairs. If more than one coach pushes his/her button, the power then shifts to the artists to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes his/her button, the artist is eliminated from the competition.

Once teams are set, the battle is on. Coaches dedicate themselves to developing their teams of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success, along with help from their celebrity advisers. During the battle rounds, the coaches pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. After the vocal battle, the coach must choose which of his/her singers will advance to the next round of competition, while the losing artist is available to be stolen by another coach. Each coach has two steals available during the battle rounds.
At the end of the battles, only the strongest members of each coachs roster remain and proceed to the knockout rounds. Here, the artists are paired against a teammate once more, but this time, they select their own songs to perform individually, while their direct competitor watches and waits. They are competing for their coach's confidence and decision to take them to the live shows. In the live playoff rounds, the Top 20 artists compete to secure a spot in the live shows. Artists perform live, and Americans vote to save their two favorite artists from each team. The coaches then save one remaining artist to complete their roster. The remaining contestants move on to the final phase of the competition, the live shows.
In the final live-performance phase of the competition, the Top 12 artists compete each week against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience votes to save their favorite artists.
In the end, one is named The Voice and receives the grand prize of a recording contract.

6. What is the format of The Voice? => It has five stages of competition: ________.

7. When is the artist able to choose the coach during the blind auditions? => When more than one coach pushes his/her button, _____.

8. What do the coaches do to prepare for the battle rounds? => They dedicate themselves to developing their teams of artists,___ .

10. What is the role of the audiences in the playoff rounds and the final live-performance phase of the competition? => They vote to save their two favorite artists,____

The first reason why many families do volunteer work is that they feel satisfied and proud. The feeling of fulfillment comes from helping the community and other people. In addition, volunteering is a great way for families to have fun and closer. But many people say they don’t have time to volunteer because they have to work and take of their families. If that’s the case, try rethinking some of your free time as a family. You could select just one or two projects a year and make them a family tradition. For instance, your family can make and donate gift blankets for the old homeless people on holidays. Your family can also spend only one Saturday morning a month collecting rubbish in your neighborhood.

1. How do people often feel when they volunteer?

2. Why don’t some people have time to volunteer?

3. How can your family help the old homeless people?

II. Read this passage carefully and then choose the best answers to the questions below by circling the corresponding letter A, B, C, or D. (1.0 point)

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The main function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theatre provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages.

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based on speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few.

3. Applauding was cited as an example of

     A. a sign B. a signal C. a symbol D. a gesture

     B. Because people wanted to communicate across long distances.

     C. Because people believed that signals, and symbols were obsolete.

     D. Because people wanted new forms of entertainment.

5. It may be concluded from this passage that

II. Read the passage carefully and then do the tasks. We use many different energy sources to do work for us. Energy sources are classified into two groups - renewable and nonrenewable. Non-renewable energy sources are those that take millions of years to form and will run out some day. It is energy that comes from fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Fossil fuels are mainly made up of carbon and were formed millions of years ago. The chemical reaction which takes place when we burn fossil fuels releases carbon compounds such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air. Carbon dioxide is one of the green house gases which is contributing to global warming and air pollution. On the other hand, renewable energy sources will never run out, are better for the environment and do not cause pollution. Renewable energy is often called green energy because it is a natural energy, always available and does not have to be formed like nonrenewable energy. The green energy is always there. For example, the Sun consistently shines, water is abundant, and the winds blow throughout the year. The five types include solar, energy from the Sun; geothermal, energy from heat within the Earth; hydroelectric, energy from moving water; biomass, energy from dead plants and microorganisms and finally, energy from the wind. A. Decide if the flowing statements are True (T) or False (F) 1. Non -renewable energy is a source of energy that will eventually run out. 2. Renewable energy comes from natural sources, like sunlight, wind, water, and heat of the Earth. 3. Burning fossil fuels is harmful to the environment. 4.
