The Shuttle Era Comes to an End

The set of Space Shuttle missions run by NASA captivated the world and proved that reusable spacecraft could be used to bring astronauts and cargo into space. The Space Shuttle programme had a total of six separate orbiters, five of which actually went into space. The first-made orbiter was only used to gather data about how the shuttles would glide back to the earth. This shuttle would be brought up into the air by a specially modified Boeing 747 and released to glide down without any power of its own.

The Space Shuttle Era ran from the first launch on April 12, 1981, and ended when the final shuttle landed on July 21, 2011. During this time, there were 135 missions flown. Of the five shuttles that did go into space, two met with disasters that killed all the crew members aboard. The first disaster happened on January 28, 1986 when Space Shuttle Challenger ran into severe problems and exploded less than two minutes after take-off. It was a major blow to NASA as a school teacher was on board the orbiter, and the launch was being watched by children from schools across the United States. The second disaster came on February 1, 2003. After having completed its mission, Space Shuttle Columbia was returning to the earth from space. During damage done to a wing during its launch, the orbiter disintegrated as it hit the earth’s atmosphere during re-entry.

Because the Space Shuttle programme was running, it largely made possible the construction of the International Space Station (ISS). The shuttles brought astronauts to the station, replenished supplies, and carried actual pieces to the Space Station up from the earth. As the Space Shuttle Era came to an end, many space lovers have been left wondering, “What’s next?” There is still plenty to explore, so we will all just have to wait and see.

What was captivated in the passage?

A. The world

B. An astronaut

C.A mission

D.A space shuttle

Prehistoric horses were far removed from the horses that Christopher Columbus brought on his ships during his second voyage to the New World. Although fossil remains of “dawn horses” have been excavated in several sites in Wyoming and New Mexico, these animal, which were biologically different from contemporary horses, had been extinct several millennia before onset of the Indian era. Although moviegoers visualize an Indian as a horse rider, Indians were not familiar with horses until the Spanish brought them to Mexico, New Mexico, Florida, and the West Indies in 1519. Those that escaped from the conquerors or were left behind became the ancestors of the wild horses that still roam the southwestern regions of the country. The Indian tribe scattered in the western plains began to breed horse about 1600.

The arrival of the horse produced a ripple effect throughout the Great Plains as the Indians living there were not nomadic and engaged in rudimentary farming and grazing land hunting. Tracking stampeding herds of buffalo and elk on foot was not the best way to stock quantities of meat to adequately feed the entire tribe during the winter. However, mounted on horses, the hunting team could cover ground within a substantial distance from their camps and transport their game back to be roasted, dried into jerky, or smoke for preservation. The hunters responsible for tribe provisions stayed on the move almost continuously, replacing their earth-and-sod lodges with tepees. Horses carried not only their riders but also their possessions and booty. The Blackfoot Indians of the Canadian plains turned almost exclusive hunters, and the Crow split off from the mainstream Indian farming in favor of hunting. In fact, some of the Apache splinter groups abandoned agricultural cultivation altogether.

The horse also drastically altered Indian warfare by allowing rapid maneuvering before, during, and after skirmishes. With the advent of the horse, the Apache, Arapahoe, and Cheyenne established themselves as territorial monopoly in the Plains. Because Indians did not have the wheel and had dragged their belongings from one settlement to another, horse also enabled them to become more mobile and expedient during tribal migration. In fact, the Cheyenne abolished the custom of discarding belongings and tepee skins simply because there were no means to transport them.

The first navigational lights in the New World were probably lanterns hung at harbor
entrances. The first lighthouse was put up by the Massachusetts Bay Colony In 1766 on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor. Paid for and maintained by light dues levied on ships, the original beacon was blown up in 1776. By then there were only a dozen or so true lighthouses in the colonies. Little over a century later, there were 700 lighthouses.

The first eight erected on the West Coast in the 1850’s featured the same basic New
England design: a Cape Cod dwelling with the tower rising from the center or standing close by. In New England and elsewhere, though, lighthouses reflected a variety of architectural styles. Since most stations in the Northeast were built on rocky eminences, enormous towers were not the rule. Some were made of stone and brick, others of wood or metal. Some stood on pilings or stilts: some were fastened to rock with iron rods. Farther south, from Maryland through the Florida Keys, the coast was low and sandy. It was often necessary to build tall towers there – massive structures like the majestic Cape Hatteras, North Carolina lighthouse, which was lit in 1870. At 190 feet, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country.

Not withstanding differences in appearance and construction, most American lighthouses shared several features: a light, living quarters, and sometimes a bell (or, later, a foghorn). They also had something else in common: a keeper and, usually, the keeper's family. The keeper's essential task was trimming the lantern Nick in order to maintain a steady bright flame. The earliest keepers came from every walk of life-they were seamen. Farmers, mechanics, rough mill hands-and appointments were often handed out by local customs commissioners as political plums. After the administration of lighthouses was taken over in 1852 by the United States Lighthouse 803rd, an agency of the Treasury Department, the keeper corps gradually became highly professional.

What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island

B. The Life of a Lighthouse Keeper

C. Early Lighthouses in the United States

D. The Modern Profession of Lighthouse Keeping

Once there is a boy lived with his mother. They were very poor and had only a bit of land to make a living by growing grain.
One day, the mother went to the market as usual. She asked if the boy want anything. The boy's eyes went wide with delight. He said: "More than anything else, I want a drum!"

But the left over money after the mother bought necessities wasn't enough to buy a drum. The boy wanted a drum so badly, but there was nothing she could do. However, on the way back home, his mother found a fine stick. It was still better than nothing, right? She was smiling badly while she was handing the gift to her son. The boy decided to not disappointed. Instead of that, he thanks his mother, tapped, slapped, banged on every object with his new stick.

Then he saw his neighbor trying to light her smoked stove. Her eyes watered and she coughed so much. The boy, without hesitation, gave the stick to his neighbor. "Here Auntie, use my stick to heat your stove"- he said. When the stove was OK and hot perfectly, she baked him a soft, round roti, a traditional Indian cake.

The boy was looking for a shade place to ẹnjoy the roti when he heard a baby crying. The baby was hungry but her mother had no food. The boy immediately told the mother to feed her baby his roti. The baby ate the warm, delicious cake. The woman insisted the boy to take a large, metal jug as her gratefulness. What a gift! It dinged like a real drum!

He almost didn't saw someone was groaning from a roadside ditch. An old man wearing torn clothes was laying in the dust. The boy ran as quickly as he could to fill the jug with water. The man drink water from the jug and told his story: "I am a trader, but robbers stole my goods." He just had 2 horses, and they were standing by a tree. The boy also gave water to them. He offered that the trader could took his jug to trade. The old man was thankful so he urge the boy to take one of his horse. "It was a rich gift!" the boy thought.

The boy climbed on the horse and rode happily down the streets. He crossed a group of man sitting under a tree. They were beautifully dressed, unfortunately they looked miserable. The boy asked if there is a problem. One young man said: "I'm going to my wedding, where this band will perform. But if I show up on foot, my bride will laugh at me" The boy hopped off the horse and handed the reins to the groom. He thought that he had a whole life without a horse. The young man needed it more than he did! The musicians leaped up and sang. A singer stopped to thank the boy for his kindness. In exchange, he deserved a beautiful drum.

The boy shouted with joy. He tapped the drum the whole way home. His mother came out to see what the noise was. The boy told her about the story of the stick, a roti, a jug, a horse and a drum.
