For example, if you see a person you don't recognize as a neighbor, in your neighborhood looking into parked cars, call the cops. We would rather try to catch him and identify him before he steals the car, rather than have to chase him (endangering lives) after he steals it.

You should also call the cops about disturbing choices people make that can effect your quality of life. If someone puts their stereo on so loud it bothers you, you should go ask him to turn it down, and if he doesn't then call the cops. If there is a loud party next door and they keep waking you up, call the cops to make them turn down the noise or break up the party. Call in if you have drug dealing or prostitution in your neighborhood. You should not have to put up with that crap.

There are many ways to get your local cops to help you, that is what they are there for, you dont necessarily have to call. If it is an ongoing problem a letter or email to the chief will usually get the ball going. Or you can wave down an officer and tell them what the problem is, they are public servants that work for the citizens. A lot of serious crimes have been solved because a citizen passed along information to an officer.

If you are considering becoming a lawyer of thinkingmp of joining the police service, a knowledge on criminology is very useful. It includes learning how evidence (evident) is collected and how tryings (try) are conducted, but it also involves learning about the psychology of crime, how the crimes(crime) think. This is very important to understand why someone becomes an offense (offense) and what makes them do what they d0. Someone might commit the thieves (thief), for example, for a number of reasons, ranging from poverty to seeking attention. Knowing what motivates a robber or a murder (murder) reduction in violence (violent) on the street. The next time you hear about a crime on TV or in the newspaper, look at the accused (accuse) and ask yourself what led this person to a life of crime.

Dear Thomas,

Are you and your family find? I know that you are doing a project at school about crimes and you want to get information from my country. I hope this letter can help you anyway.

Nowadays, we can easily notice that crimes are increasing and may not decrease, I think this condition is a big problem in my country.

As you can see there are many kinds of criminal in many crimes, and unfortunately criminals can causing trouble such as stealing money from banks or residents and destroying substance and even killing innocent people and we all can realize that killers are the most dangerous but luckily thieves are the most common.

Afterwards, I think we should reduce crimes by many activities. First of all, each person should be good and call upon everyone to be moral. Second, we should also advise criminals whom we know to be back to right. And so many another works can reduce this problem.

That's all about crimes in my country. What about yours? Wish you would get good grades for this project and don't forget to write for me.

Love,

Mai.

9. ________

prefers books that show the feelings of the author?

10. ______

is impressed by the consistent high standard of an author’s books?

A.  John Harvey on Peter Temple

I started reading Temple’s books about 10 years ago, and at the time it was fairly straightforward crime fiction set in Australia, a lot of it with a horse-racing background. The books were OK, but not exceptional. Then suddenly with The Broken Shore, he just hit something quite different and moved up a level. He is writing the kind of books I‘ve spent 20 years trying to write, and writing them better than I do. He’s using crime fiction not just to tell a story, but to say something about today’s society. He really gets the connections between politics, the police and the media right. I love the writing – it‘s really taut and a lesson in how to say a lot without being too wordy.

B.  Sara Paretsky on Liza Cody

There is a lot of good, stylish writing out there that puts me off because it’s unfelt. I’m looking for someone who has a gift for storytelling, and who is willing to do the hard work of digging into the emotional aspect of life. Liza Cody does that, and she takes a lot of risks. She doesn’t just do the easy thing to be recognized in the marketplace; she goes where the story and emotion takes her. For instance, she had to self-publish her most recent book, Ballad of A Dead Nobody, because no one in the industry was willing to. These days, you’re told you have to create a brand or a series, with a recognizable link. She is willing to turn her back on that and focus on what her inner voice is telling her.

C.  Mark Billingham on Michael Connelly

The first Connelly book I read was The Poet, his first standalone novel and a big breakthrough for him. By then, he had written four books in his Harry Bosch series, which I went back to read. He has maintained a level of quality through a long-running series – an incredibly difficult thing to achieve. People talk about how you create suspense, tricks such as cliffhangers and reveals, but actually the real secret is to create characters the readers care about. Bosch, a detective in the Los Angeles Police Department, is a character who has grown and changed, who you come to know and care about. All that aside, he is a fantastic storyteller, probably the best in modern mystery fiction. I think his days as a journalist – he was a crime reporter on the Los Angeles Times – stood him in good stead because he never forgets the story.

D.  Ann Cleeves on Johan Theorin

I read Theorin’s first novel, Echoes from the Dead, after my Swedish editor had said: ‘There’s this Swedish author writing four books set on an island in the Baltic – I wonder if he stole the idea from you?’ because I’ve written novels set in the Shetlands. I was a bit annoyed – although I’m sure it was coincidental – so I wasn’t prepared to like it. But I really loved it. He has this interesting detective who is elderly and lives in a sheltered housing complex, so he can’t be out there doing car chases. One of the books is about this crumbling house by the shore and you’re not sure if there’s a supernatural element. It has the most wonderful climax. Theorin is prepared to take his time over the telling of the story, which is unusual these days. If you look at the bestsellers, they usually move quite rapidly. There is nothing wrong with that, but Theorin writes in a much deeper, literary way.

MEMORY

"Memorize these words". "Learn this spelling rule". "Don't forget about the quiz tomorrow".

You remember things every day, but how do you do it?

When you want to call a store or an office that you don't call often, you look in the telephone book for the number. You dial the number, and then you forget it! You use your short-term memory to remember the number. Your short-term memory lasts about 30 seconds, or half a minute. However, you don't need to look in the telephone book for your best friend’s number because you already know it. This information is in your long-term memory. Your long-term memory has everything that you remember through the years.

Why do you forget things sometimes? Is there a reason? Yes, there are several. The major reason for forgetting something is that you did not learn it well in the beginning. For example, you meet some new people, and right away, you forget their names. You hear the names but you do not learn them, so you forget them.

You can help yourself remember better. Here are some ideas:

1. Move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory. You can do this if you practice the new information. Say it to yourself out loud. Think about it.

2. After you learn something, study it again and again. Learn it more than you need to. This process is called overlearning. For example, when you learn new words, practice using them in sentences. Don't try to memorize words from a list only.

3. Make sure that you understand new information. It is very difficult to remember something that you don't understand. Ask questions when you learn something new to be certain that you understand.

4. Do not listen to music or watch TV when you study. You will remember better if you concentrate on one thing at a time.

5. Try to connect new information with something that you already know. For example, when you learn the name of a new kind of food, think of a similar kind of food that you already know.

6. Divide new information into several parts (about five or six). Learn one part at time and stop for few minutes. Don't sit down and try to learn a very large amount of new information all at once.

7. Try to make a picture in your mind. For example, if you hear or see a new word, make a picture of how it looks to you in your mind. This “mental” picture will help you remember that word the next time you see or hear it.

8. Think of word clues to help you remember information. One very helpful kind of word clue is an acronym. An acronym is a word formed from the first letter of a group of words. For example, many American schoolchildren learn the names of the Great Lakes in the North America by remembering the word homes. Homes is an acronym that comes from the names of the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.

9. Relax when you study! Try to enjoy yourself. You are learning new things every minute. You will remember better if you are happy and relaxed.

All of these things would be useless for remembering new words EXCEPT______.

A. making a list of them and memorizing them

B. writing them down in your notebook

C. putting them in alphabetical order

D. practicing using them in sentences

This process is called overlearning. For example, when you learn new words, practice using them in sentences. Don't try to memorize words from a list only”- (Sau khi bạn tiếp thu một điều gì đó, hãy nghiền ngẫm nó nhiều lần.
