The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day. It is a public holiday in both Britain and America. On that day, children send Mother’s Day cards to their mothers. They give their mothers flowers or sweets as presents. Fathers and children do the cooking so that mothers can have a rest.
In the USA, Mother’s Day started in 1860s.. There was a small town called Pruntytown in the middle of the USA. People in the town fought against each other during a war. After the war, they hated each other. Mrs Ann Reeves Janis wanted the people to make friends with each other again. So she started “Mother’s Friendship Day”. On that day, she visited all the other mothers in the town and said, “Let us be friends with each other again”.
Her idea succeeded. The same thing happened in other parts of the country. After she died, her daughter carried on her idea. In 1908, “Mother’s Friendship Day” became “Mother’s Day”.

The modern Mother’s Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April, or May as a day to honour mothers and motherhood.
Historically, the celebration has its origin in ancient customs and traditions. The ancient Greeks kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno (an ancient Roman goddess), though mothers were usually given gifts on this day. In Europe there were several long standing traditions where a specific Sunday was set aside to honour motherhood and mothers.
Today, the holiday has become very popular around the world. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and tank them for all their love and support. There is also a tradition of gifting flowers, cards and other gifts to mothers on the occasion.

“The Beauty and the Beast” is a heartfelt story about true love which transforms the Beast into a prince. The fairytale starts with a young girl who lived with her father and two sisters. They lived a good life in a big house but due to some unfortunate turn of events her father lost all his money. They were forced to move into a smaller house. One day the father found out there is a slight chance he could get back a part of his fortune when one of the ships got back. FRIENDS AGAIN - FOREVER!

Mary Allen was my best friend - like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

When I was eighteen, my family moved away. Mary and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special occasions - like my wedding and Mary's. Soon we were busy with our children and moving to our new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back and stamped: " Address Unknown" I had no idea how to find Mary.

Over the years I thought of Mary often. I wanted to share stories of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sorrow when my brother and mother died. There was an empty space in my heart that only a friend like Mary could fill.

One day I was reading the newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked a lot like Mary and whose last name was Wagman - Mary's married name. " There must be thousands of Wagman " I thought but I wrote to her anyway.

She called as soon as she got my letter. " Mrs. Tobin! " she said excitedly. " Mary Allen Wagman is my mother. ". Minutes later I heard a voice that I recognized instantly, even after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each other's lives.

Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there's one thing that Mary and I know for sure: We won't lose each other again!
