Question 6: Read the following passage and choose the best answer. Write your answers in the numbered blanks provided below the passage. (20point)

In addition to the great ridges and volcanic chains, the oceans conceal another form of undersea mountains: the strange guyot, or flat-topped seamount. No marine geologist even suspected the  existence of these isolated mountains until they were discovered by geologist Harry H. Hess in 1946.   He was serving at the time as naval officer on a ship equipped with a fathometer. Hess named these truncated peaks for the nineteenth-century Swiss-born geologist Arnold Guyot, who had served on the faculty of Princeton University for thirty years. Since then, hundreds of guyots have been discovered in every ocean but the Arctic. Like offshore canyons, guyots present a challenge to oceanographic theory. They are believed to be extinct volcanoes. Their flat tops indicate that they once stood above or just below the surface, where the action of waves leveled off their peaks. Yet today, by definition, their summits are at least 600 feet below the surface, and some are as deep as 8,200 feet. Most lie between 3,200 feet and 6,500 feet. Their tops are not really flat but slope upward to a low pinnacle at the center. Dredging from the tops of guyots has recovered basalt and coral rubble, and that would be expected from the eroded tops of what were once islands. Some of this material is over 80 million years old. Geologists think the drowning of the guyots involved two processes: The great weight of the volcanic mountains depressed the sea floor beneath them, and the level of the sea rose a number of times, especially when the last Ice Age ended, some 8,000 to 11.000 years ago.

Conversation
Some recent research into conversation between men and women has produced results which will surprise few women. Men always interrupt women when they talk. One researcher feels that men regard female talk as a kind of conversational housework. They expect women to play a supporting role. So a man interrupts in a display of dominance or control. Men also have a much more unpleasant listening style. Whereas a woman uses gestures or says "mm", a man will say such things as "right" or "okay" thus setting the stage for an interruption. Conservation of this kind is, then, hardly meaningful communication. Male talk is often argumentative while the other person has said. The research would indicate that women are better listeners than men. Yet, listeing secretly to conservations between groups of women, one has the impression of several simultaneous monologues into which no man would be able to get a chance to speak.

                                                     MY VILLAGE

We are Khmer Krom, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the south of Viet Nam. We live by farming - mostly rice - and fishing on the Mekong River. Life is sometimes hard as our work depends heavily on the weather. When it is not harvest time, the men of the village go fishing from early morning and don't return until late afternoon. By the time they return, most of the village women will be waiting for them on the river bank. They wait to buy the fish, which they will later sell at the local market or bring to the nearby town for a higher price. The children will be there ,too. We love running around and waiting for the boats to come in.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

In an effort to fight pollution and help the environment, the Marina Hills Ecology Club offers free trees to institutions willing to plant them on their grounds. Among those that took advantage of the offer was Marina Hills High School. After consulting with his teachers on where to plant the trees, Principal Max Webb contacted the Ecology Club. But when the seedlings arrived, Webb had an idea. Instead of planting the young trees in front of the school, he thought it would be better to put them behind the school, where the sun gets very hot in the afternoon. “It gets so hot inside the building that the students start to sweat during their afternoon classes,” said Webb. “Now the shade from our trees will bring them some relief.”

“There was no argument from the teachers,” he added. “When I proposed the idea, everyone said, “Why didn’t I think of that?”. “The relief won’t come until the trees grow taller, but the school will not have to wait long because it requested two species of trees that grow quickly. “Time is key, and we wanted our trees to get big fast,” said Webb. “We were given a wide choice, from shrubs to fruit trees. We requested eucalyptus and willow trees.” Webb said he is also looking forward to finally seeing some wildlife in the school yard at Marina Hills High School. “If all you have is a grass lawn with no trees, you can’t expect the local birds to come and visit,” said Webb. “They have no place to make their nests. Now that will change, and we’ll be able to see birds from our classroom windows.”
