The Lady Detective Agency

Rebecca Jane started The Lady Detective Agency in 2006. She started it because she thought her husband was lying to her. She told the police but they were not interested in helping her. She wanted to know the truth. She followed her husband and discovered that he was lying to her about many things. A friend asked her to help investigate her husband, and the Agency was born. “I never wanted to be a private eye,” says Rebecca, “but the opportunity was there. Of course, I’m not the first female detective in the world – there are many excellent female police detectives – but I think we are the first detective agency to only employ women.” The Agency has grown very fast, and now the company has offices in London, Manchester and Stockholm, and has 15 employees. This year, the Agency opened a training school for lady detectives, and the classes are very popular. Rebecca enjoys teaching other detectives, but mostly she enjoys helping her clients. “The job is very interesting,” she says. “Every day is different. Tomorrow I’m going to help a man find his dog, and then I’m going to the US on Friday for a new case.” In the future, Rebecca Jane intends to open an office in the US. “I have an American client who asked me to help find her husband. She came to me because there are no female detectives in the US, and she felt more comfortable talking to a woman about her missing husband. There may be more women like her who need our help.

” Statements

1. Rebecca’s first job as a detective was to spy on a friend’s husband.

2. Rebecca is the first female detective in the world.

3. The Lady Detective Agency has offices in three countries.

4. Rebecca plans to open an office in the US.

Part 4 (18 points)Read the interview with a singer. Math the information in the statements(1– 9) to the paragraphs(A - D). Then decide if the statements are true(T)/ False( F).

Write your answers in “Your answer”

A.    You recently went to Greece to play with a band – how did that happen?

Shortly before I finished university, I got a cally from a bass player living                                                                                                                                                    in Greece who wanted a singer for the summer. They were playing in a bar in a beautiful harbour town. He got my numeber from my singing teacher, who couldn’t do it. He thought it would be a great opportunity for me to gain confidence and to sing somewhere else than London bars. It was something I jumped at – a few days later I was on the plane. It was quite spontaneous.

B.     Well, the best things usually are. Was singing away from London something?

To be honest, I’d never really thought about it before. It was perfect timing though, as I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do after finishing my studies. It was a fantastic opportunity I couldn’t miss. Plus, I can’t say that I was sad to leave behind the smoky bars of  London for while! Since then, I’ve also played in Venice and toured around Italy and Germany. I think my time spent in Greece gave me the confidence to do this, though.

C. Well, I can believe that. How did you find the change of atmosphere – going from London bars to Greece ones?

It was great. Greece was breathtaking – beautiful mountains and flowers as far as the eye could see. The weather was great, too. It’s much nicer spending evenings outside by the sea than a smelly pub in the middle of London. I think the people were a bit more relaxed, too – not stressed by the fast city like those I sing to at home. I also found the audience more attentive in Greece,

which did wonders for my confidence as a singer.

C.    Did the time you spent away teach you anything else?

It taught me that I could go away from home on my own and be able to cope. I’d never been away from home for more than two weeks before and always with friends or family, so I grew a lot while I was away. It was a positive experience in so many ways.

1.      Before going to Greece, Kate had fixed plans for her future.

2.      Kate enjoyed the atmosphere in Greece.

3.      Her stay in Greece encouraged Kate to travel more.

4.      Kate thought a lot about accepting the offer to go to Greece.

5.      Thanks to her stay in Greece, Kate became more confident.

6.      Kate was recommended to the band by a friend.

7.      Kate was a little happy about leaving London.

8.      People in Greece listened to Kate’s songs carefully and with interest.

9.      Kate was offered the job in Greece for one year.

Global fashion
Gillian Turner-Niles is a fashion photographer. She lives in New York and works in the fashion capitals of the world. You can see her photographs on the pages of fashion magazines across the world. Her clients include Gucci, Dior, Ferragamo, even the sports clothing company Nike. But today she’s talking to me by phone from the middle of Sudan. So, what is she doing there?
‘I’m taking photographs, of course!’ She explains, ‘I’m not taking photographs for Vogue or anyone else. It’s like a holiday. In my business, it’s easy to forget there’s another world out there. And I like looking at clothes in a different way when I travel.’
But in this world of global fashion, people all over the world wear the same clothes. The businessman’s suit in Beijing is like the businessman’s suit in Berlin. And jeans and T-shirts are almost a type of uniform these days.
‘Yes, I think that’s true in the big international cities,’ Gillian says. ‘But I’m visiting regions in the world with their own traditional clothes and their own fashions. That’s especially true in this part of Africa.’
1. New York is the capital of world fashion
2. Gillian Turner-Niles just takes photos for her company.
3. Gillian Turner-Niles loves her job because she doesn't have to work for any magazines.
4. Today, people in the world wear mostly the same styles of fashion

The world-famous Inca site Machu Picchu in Peru is going to get an airport. Peru's government started preparing the ground for the airport earlier this week. Around one million tourists visit Machu Picchu every year. Government officials hope the new Chinchero International Airport will make it easier for tourists to reach the site. Getting to Machu Picchu currently takes time and requires a bus and train. The nearest airport is 120 kilometers away in the city of Cuzco. The new airport will allow direct international flights into the heart of the Machu Picchu area. The government says this will be a boost for the country's tourism industry. More than 7 million passengers a year may use the airport.

Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century by the Inca people. They built it 2,430 meters up on a misty peak in the Andes Mountains. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. Many people are unhappy about the building of the new airport. Conservationists say it will cause a lot of damage to Machu Picchu and its surrounding rural communities. Peruvian archaeologist Abel Traslaviña said: "The airport...endangers the conservation of one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the world. An airport in the surroundings of the Sacred Valley will affect the integrity of a complex Inca landscape and will cause irreparable damage due to noise, traffic and uncontrolled urbanization."

1. The new airport will be the first airport in Peru to have flights to Machu Picchu.                                                           _______2. Over a million tourists visit Machu Picchu by air every year.                                                                                                                            _________

White cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy in the Second World War and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too. But it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt really popular: actors Marlon Brando and James Dean wore classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). After these films, every young man wanted to wear one.

Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film about de souffle (breathless), American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt advertising an English language newspaper. This started a new fashion in T-shirts for women, but it wasn’t until the mid-1960s that companies like Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as ‘walking advertisements’.
