Có nhiều cách nói lái:

Cách 1: Đổi âm sau, giữ chữ đầu và thanh. Ví dụ: mèo cái → mài kéo, cối đá → cá đối, hai tư → hư tai, đơn giản → đang giỡn (đối với miền Nam), trời cho → trò chơi, đại học → độc hại (đối với miền Nam), vô hàng → giang hồ (đối với miền Nam), mau co → mo cau, giải phóng → phỏng giái, đánh trâu → đấu tranh.

Cách 2: Đổi toàn bộ, trước ra sau, nhưng giữ thanh. Ví dụ: đầu tiên → tiền đâu, từ đâu → đầu tư, đấu tranh → tránh đâu...

Cách 3: Đổi dấu thanh điệu (kiểu lái Bắc). Ví dụ: Thụy Điển → thủy điện, bí mật → bị mất, mộng năng → nặng mông, "Mộng dưới hoa" (ca khúc) thành… họa dưới mông

Cách 4: Đổi phụ âm đầu. Ví dụ: cao đẳng → đau cẳng (đối với miền Nam), giải pháp → phải giáp.

Cách 5: Đổi âm sau và thanh sau, giữ phụ âm đầu. Ví dụ: bí mật → bật mí, một cái → mái cột, mèo cái → mái kèo, trâu đực → trực đâu, trâu cái → trái cau (đối với miền Nam), mắc cười → mười cắc, tánh mạng → táng mạnh, hổ chết → hết chỗ.

Lưu ý:

Không phải từ nào cũng có thể nói lái được. Những từ láy toàn bộ, hai từ lặp lại hoàn toàn, từ có chung dấu thanh và âm đầu, dấu thanh và vần, âm đầu và vần đều không nói lái được.Ví dụ: luôn luôn, mãi mãi, đi đâu (có chung phụ âm đầu và dấu thanh).

Đại đa số là lái đôi (hai tiếng), nhưng cũng có lái ba. Ví dụ: Muốn cầu gia đạo thì phải cạo da đầu, chà đồ nhôm → chôm đồ nhà, ban lãnh đạo → bao lãnh đạn, chả lo gì → chỉ lo già, chả sợ chi → chỉ sợ cha, có chỗ đứng → cứng chỗ đó, Hương qua đèo → heo qua đường.
