Theo như chúng ta biết mọi quốc gia đều có quần áo truyền thống. Áo dài được gọi là quần áo truyền thống Việt Nam đặc biệt là phụ nữ. Các phiên bản đầu tiên của "Áo dài" bắt đầu từ năm 1744 khi chúa Vũ Vương của triều Nguyễn đã quyết định cả đàn ông và phụ nữ nên mặc quần áo và áo choàng có nút ở phía trước. Từ "ao dai" ban đầu được áp dụng cho trang phục mặc tại tòa án của các chúa Nguyễn ở Huế vào thế kỷ 18. Lấy cảm hứng từ thời trang Paris, Nguyễn Cát Tường và các nghệ sĩ liên kết với Đại học Hà Nội đã thiết kế lại thân hình như một chiếc váy hiện đại trong những năm 1920 và 1930.
