WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

One of the most popular quiz programmes on television in the world is called Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? In Britain, the quiz master is Chris Tarrant. He asks the contestants fifteen questions. The first questions are easy but later they are more difficult. If you can answer the fourteenth question, you can win £500,000. You can win a million pounds if you can answer the last question. Of course, the last question is very difficult.

All the questions on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? are multiple-choice questions. After you hear the question, you see four answers. Only one answer is correct. You have to choose the correct answer. If you don’t know the answer to a question, there are three ways you can get help: you can ask the quizmaster to take away two wrong answers; you can ask the studio audience which answer is right; or you can telephone a friend and ask for help. You can only do these things once. Very few people win the million pounds. The first person won a million pounds one year after the programme started.

Today, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? can be seen in more than 100 countries and is now the world’s most popular quiz programme.

In 1783, two French brothers built the first balloon to take people into the air. One hundred and twenty years .later.., in 1903, the Wright brothers built the first plane with an engine and flew in it. This was .in.. the United States. Then, in 1918, the US Post Office began the first airmail service.

Aeroplanes changed a lot in the next thirty years. Then, in the 1950s, aeroplanes became much .faster.. because they had jet engines.

In 1976, Concorde was built in the UK and France. It was the fastest passenger plane in the world at that time and it .can.. fly at 2300 kilometres an hour, so the journey from London to Newyork was only four hours.

Today, millions of people travel .by.. aeroplane, and it is difficult to think of a world without them.

Making a TV serial

It usually takes five days to make one episode of a TV serial. In that time, the actors must learn their words, the director must plan every move of the ators and the crew, and then they must record the episode on video.

First, the actors read the script to themselves. Then they come together and read the script aloud with the director. They call this a “table reading” because they all sit round a table.

The hard work begins on the second day. The actors and the director work through the episode again and again. The director helps the actors to do it better each time.

The actors and the director work together for another day. The director also starts to think about how the actors should move and how the cameras should record each scene (A scene = a part of an episode).

The fourth day is a big day for the crew. While the actors go through the episode again, the crew work out what they must do in each scene. There are usually about forty people in the crew, so this is important: everybody must know what to do, where and when.

On the last day, the actors and the crew pratise and prepare together for the last time before the recording. Then the cameras and microphones start recording. Each part of the episode is recorded more than once, so the director can choose the best recordings later. The recording usually takes about four hours. But if there are problems, everyone works all night.

Before the actors go home after the recording, the director gives them the script for the nest episode.
