Not so long ago almost any student who successfully completed a university degree or diploma course could find a good career easily. Companies toured the academic institutions, competing with each other to recruit graduates. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs. Most career organizations highlight three stages for graduates to follow in the process of securing a suitable career: recognizing abilities, matching these to available vacancies and presenting them well to prospective employers. Job seekers have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skilld within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. To do this, graduates can study job vacancies and information in newspapers or they can visit a career office, write to possible employers for information or contact friends or relatives who may already be involved in a particular profession. Affter studying all the various options, they they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers. Good personal presentation is essential in the search for a good career. Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly. Where additional information is asked for, job seekers should describe their abilities and work experience in more depth, with examples if possible. They should try to balance their own abilities with the employers’ need, explain why they are interested in a career with the particular company and try to show that they are already know something about the company and its activities. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability,, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.

Technology is developing at a very fast rate, and what most people did not even think could be real

ĐÀO THỊ THỦY CHUNG
a few years ago is now becoming a reality. Although many will use and advertise modern
technology for many of its achievements and advancements, what many don’t realize is that it has
affected and continues to affect society and people in general in a negative way.
Newspaper companies, as we all know, have been hit very hard by the advancements in
technology. Big newspapers have been forced to either lay off a percentage of their work force or
shut down altogether because news is readily available for free on the Internet. Music does not
have to be purchased at music stores any more because MP3 files are readily available on the
Internet as well, thus causing them to shut their doors for good. The movie industry has also been
hit hard because DVD sales have decreased since people can pay for and download their favorite
movies online.
Technology has its benefits, but when you take a look at how people communicate with one
another, you will quickly see that it has a negative impact. Modern technology has allowed people
to communicate with just about anyone they want to at any given time. The fact remains that
people do not interact personally with one another as often as they used to. This has created a
barrier for face-to-face communication among people because they no longer have to hold a
meeting in an office or they no longer have to call friends or family members together to wish
them a happy birthday or congratulate them on their recent success.
As a result, people don’t feel the urgent need to step outside of their home to find
entertainment, such as participating in a dynamic game of basketball with friends, meeting a friend
at a coffee shop, etc.
26. According to the first paragraph, modern technology _________________
A. is developing rapidly B. comes true. C. benefits us a lot D.
has its disadvantages
27. The word “them” in paragraph 2 refers to ___
A. newspaper companies B. advancements C. music stores D. MP3 files
28. The author shows us the negative effects of the technology by _____.
A. telling some stories B. giving some examples
C. listing some figures D. doing some
experiments
29. What does he underlined word “interact” in the third paragraph probably mean?
A. argue B. consult C. communicate D. work
30. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The negative effects of advancing technology B. The benefits of the
modern technology
C. The development of the modern technology D. The social problems caused by the
technology

Millions of people use contact lenses worldwide. They were made to replace glasses and are very useful because sometimes glasses are inconvenient. In sports, for instance, many athletes wear contact lenses instead of using obnoxious sports goggles because they are much safer. Contact lenses can also be used to correct some conditions that glasses are not capable of fixing. People also use them if they want to change the color of their eyes. One can wear contact lenses every day, or they can be used only once, for example, to have red eyes with a vampire costume.

The idea of wearing contact lenses for better vision was first thought of by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1500s. He made sketches but there is no evidence that his design was ever realized. Throughout the 1800s many scientists played with the idea of contact lenses but no one perfected the use of them. The first models were very uncomfortable so they could not be worn for long periods of time. They were not flexible and did not let oxygen get to the eyes so in some cases they caused more problems than they fixed. The earlier versions were also very fragile and expensive, which made them not usable for many people.

It wasn’t until the late 1900s that contact lenses started to be effective and affordable enough for everyone to use. They became more and more popular as people became aware that there was an alternative to wearing glasses. In recent years, people have been developing even more advanced contact lenses. Now they can not only fix poor vision, but can improve good vision. Although contact lenses have become extremely popular over the last few decades, laser technology now allows people to improve their eyesight through a relatively quick, inexpensive, and painless procedure. One day, this technology may phase out contact lenses.

D. the first models

80. Why does the author mention athletes in the passage?

A. To explain that some sports do not allow glasses

B. To show that athletes are concerned for their health

C. To illustrate the development of today’s contact lenses

D. To give an example of the usefulness of contact lenses
