THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH

Buzz Aldrin was part of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 when man first walked on the moon. Neil Armstrong went first, followed by Buzz. Nothing in all his training had prepared him for that moment, and he has been travelling the world ever since, reliving the experience. He was born in New Jersey in 1930, and he graduated from West Point Military Academy. He served as a pilot in Korea and West Germany, and in 1966 he was chosen as an astronaut.

Apollo  11 was launched to the moon on July 16. Four days later they landed near the Sea of Tranquility. The mission ended on July 24, with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

On coming back to earth, he became very depressed, and suffered from alcoholism. He had married for the first time when he was younmg, and had three children. His second marriage lasted a very short time.

Fortuntely, he seems to have found happiness and stability with his third wife, Loris Driggs Cannon, who saved him from self-destruction. They now live with their three dogs in California, and have six cars "for fun". He has written his autobiography and a sciece fiction book, called Encounter with Tiber, which was published in 1996. He now travels the world, giving lecture tours and raising funds for space exploration.

IX. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer for each question.

The dog has always been considered man's best friend. Always noted for being particularly faithful in watching over children, he also has his place by the fireside, in the cow pasture, on the sheep range, and beside the hunter in forest or blind. He is easy to train, works hard, and often performs astonishing feats. And in the frozen polar regions he was once the principal motive power, before being largely displaced by the plane and helicopter.

(Because he howls or whines in the presence of impending, death, the dog was once thought to have supernatural powers and believed to be capable of seeing gods and ghosts invisible to men.) Actually, the basis for these beliefs lies in the hound's sensitivity to people's feelings and his superior hearing ability and sense of smell, which enable him to detect signs hidden from human observation. His record of saving lives is outstanding, for he often gives warning of fire and other dangers not noticed by his master.

The dog's major contribution, however, has been to medical research. (Both his diet and his structure are comparable to those of the human being, and so he has been the subject of countless experiments.) open-heạrt surgery has been made possible largely because of the dog. But his sacrifice has repaid his own species as well by safeguarding it from rabies, distemper, and other diseases.

76. The dog has always been noted for _______.

A. protecting children B. assisting shepherds

c. helping hunters D. herding cattle

77.The dog probably whines in the presence of death because he can ______.

A. see ghosts and spirits B. give warning of danger

c. sense unhappiness around him D. perform astonishing feats

78. Dogs are similar to human beings in ______ .
