In most cases the interview is the last hurdle that an applicant has to clear before landing a job. Interviews probably aren’t a foolproof method of selecting candidates; however, I can’t suggest any better alternatives.

An employer can’t fully assess a candidate’s capabilities, personality or character during an interview. Several personality development centers now prepare candidates for interviews. They are taught how to answer questions that are frequently asked during interviews. Sometimes a candidate who possesses better qualifications may fail to get the job because of his poor performance in the interview.

However, I don’t think that interviews should be done away with. Employers all over the world use this selection process to find the best candidates. This is a clear indication that interviews are an efficient method of selecting good candidates.

In my opinion, interviews should not be the only criterion for selecting candidates. They should be used in conjunction with written examinations during which a candidate’s proficiency in various subjects can be assessed. In addition, candidates should be asked to participate in debates or group discussions. Their real personality and leadership skills will come to the fore during these events.

To conclude, the interview is not a flawed recruitment process. It isn’t perfect but it certainly has more merits than demerits. In fact, when interviews are used in conjunction with other personality tests, they will definitely help businesses find the best candidates. Organisations should also consider hiring fresh graduates on a probationary basis. Those who deliver excellent performance during the probationary period should be hired to fill permanent positions.

One of the ways we assess students on this course is to give them a level related to the Common European Framework (CEFR). This framework is now being used in 16 universities in Vietnam. The goal of this course is for students to reach at least B1 or B2 if you want to progress to IELTS (see attachment below). This means you are an independent user of English. You are assessed throughout the course in every lesson and you will be required to produce an e-portfolio showing your best work (a website). I will explain how to do this later in the course. For now, you should start to keep a journal of your learning here. This should reflect what you have learned. Please write about your reflections on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: Feelings about what you have learned today The role of the CRC and Vietnam Something new and interesting that you learned today and that you didn't know before. Please write150-200 words and check your work BEFORE you turn it in.

A: What do you plan to do for our trip cycling to the countryside this weekend?

(Bạn định làm gì cho chuyến đi đạp xe về vùng nông thôn vào cuối tuần này?)

B: I like the feeling of riding a bike through the forest and up to the mountain. I would like to enjoy the fresh atmosphere in the woods while cycling.

(Tôi thích cảm giác đạp xe xuyên rừng và lên núi. Tôi muốn tận hưởng bầu không khí trong lành trong rừng khi đạp xe.)

A: I'm not keen on the forest because I'm afraid of some insects, I don't know how to deal with them. What do you think about cycling along the shore?

(Tôi không thích đi rừng vì tôi sợ một số côn trùng, tôi không biết làm thế nào để đối phó với chúng. Bạn nghĩ gì về việc đạp xe dọc theo bờ biển?)

B: It's great. Because we start in the early morning, it's a good idea to watch the sun rise.

(Thật tuyệt. Bởi vì chúng ta bắt đầu vào sáng sớm, nên đó là một ý tưởng hay để ngắm mặt trời mọc.)

A: That's settled then.

(Quyết định vậy đi.)
