The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is located in Paris, France. It was constructed between 1887 and 1889 to be the entranceway to the 1889 World’s Fair and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The Tower was opened to visitors on May 6,1889.

Gustave Eiffel’s design was chosen from among 107 that were submitted to the World’s Fair design competition. However, many Parisians, especially artists, did not like his design and protested the tower’s construction. They thought it would be an eyesore, but once it was built, most Parisians soon loved the tower.

The tower is made of iron and weights over 10,000 tons. It is 324 meters tall, including antenna at its top, and has a staircase with 1,665 steps. There are also elevators to take visitors to the top platform where there is a panoramic view of Paris. The original elevators, now computerized, are still in use. Over 60 tons of paint are applied to the tower every seven years to keep it from rusting.

The Eiffel Tower has become a symbol of Paris. It is the most recognized monument in Europe, and many people think it is an architectural masterpiece. Over 250 million people have visited it since May of 1889.

1.   The Eiffel Tower was originally built to be a watchtower.

2.   The Eiffel Tower was opened to the public on May 6,1889.

Jeans are the most popular kind of clothing in the world. They are popular almost everywhere and with everybody. They are considered not just practical but very fashionable as well. But what do you know about the history of jeans? Who made the first jeans?

In 1850 Levi Strauss, a young immigrant from Germany, arrived in San Francisco. He came to sell canvas, a heavy fabric used for tents, to gold miners. One day Strauss saw that the miners needed strong clothes for work. He quickly took some of his canvas and made it into pants. These pants were very strong and lasted a long time. The pants became very popular immediately. Later Strauss wanted to make his pants even better, so he started making his pants from cotton cloth that was softer than canvas but just as strong. This fabric came from Nimes, a city in France, and was called “denim” (from de Nimes). Denim was popular in the fifteenth century. Christopher Columbus used denim for the sails of his ships. Sailors in Genoa, Italy, wore denim pants. The word “jeans” comes from the word “Genoa”. Mr. Strauss made the first jeans in the United States, but their name and their kind of cloth came from Italy and France.

38. Levi Strauss was born in America.

39. Levi Strauss turned strong canvas cloth which he was originally going to sell for tents into pants.

40. The purpose of producing jeans was to provide gold miners strong clothes for work.

41. To make his pants better, Levi Strauss substituted denim for canvas.

42. Blue jeans used to be the most popular pants worldwide.

City libraries have only 10 percent of the traffic that car washes  have. But how do you explain this? An annual book festival in west Los Angeles is" sold-out" year after year.

This outdoor festival , sponsored by a newspaper , occurs every April for one weekend . This year's attendance was estimated(ước đoán) at 70,000 on Saturday and 75,000 on Sunday . People came from all over California.

A food court sold all kinds of popular and ethnic (truyền thống) foods, from American hamburgers to Hawaiian shave ice drinks . Except for a $7 parking fee, the festival was free. Even so , some people avoided the food court prices by sneaking (lẩn trốn, ăn trộm)in their town sandwiches and drinks.

The idea for the festival occurred years ago , and book festivals were already popular in other US cities, but nobody knew if it would succeed in Los Angeles . " Angelenos are very unpredictable, (không thể đoán được) " said one of the festival founders.

1/ ............ The most popular reading materials in Los Angeles are related to entertainment.

2/ ............ Not many people in Los Angeles go to city libraries.

3/ ............ The festival is held every year.

4/ ............ The festival started at the beginning of April and ended at the end of the month.

5/ ............ The festival was held inside a building.

6/ ............ This year , more people came to the festival on Sunday than on Saturday.

7/............. The festival was completely free of charge .

8/ ..........Some people brought their own sandwiches because the food court did not have that.

10/......... The founders were sure that Los Angeles people would love the book festival.

Family Camping

There are many popular leisure time activities, but one of the most enjoyable is family time. Most people enjoy being with their families. There are many things to do with your family, too. Families can go to the movies, travel, visit museums, and play sports together. The most common family activity is probably camping. Many families like camping. It is a chance for the whole family to work together. They can stay in the wild. Children gather dry wood for the fire. Their parents set up the tents. Then the whole family gathers around the fire. They enjoy a special meal together. Then, they set off into the woods with a compass and a map. After hiking the trails, everyone gets a fishing pole. Each person casts the fishing line out into the river. Who gets the biggest fish? It’s a great contest. Later, the children clean the fish by the river. They take the scales off the fish. Mom fries the fish over the campfire. Dad cleans up when everyone is finished. You don’t want wild animals coming to eat your leftovers! Then everyone goes into their tents for a restful night. While there are many things that families can do together, camping is probably the most exciting

Pizza is a traditional Italian dish. It’s popular in Italy but around the world. Naples, a city in southern Italy, is believed to be the birthplace of pizza. It’s the food of the poor. The truly modern pizza we eat today starts with the Margherita pizza. In 1889, Queen Margherita went on a trip to Naples. She heard about pizza and asked to try it. Don Raffaele Esposito, the most famous pizza maker, was asked to prepare it. He prepared two traditional and one new type of pizza, but the Queen liked the new one topped with tomatoes, Mozzarella cheese and fresh basil the best.
