In 1900 the United States had only three cities with more than a million residents-New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. By 1930, it had ten giant metropolises. The newer ones experienced remarkable growth, which reflected basic changes in the economy. The population of Los Angeles (114,000 in 1900) rose spectacularly in the early decades of the twentieth century, increasing a dramatic 1,400 percent from 1900 to 1930.

A number of circumstances contributed to the meteoric rise of Los Angeles. The agricultural potential of the area was enormous if water for irrigation could be found, and the city founders had the vision and dating to obtain it by constructing a 225-mile aqueduct, completed in 1913, to tap the water of the Owens River. The city had a superb natural harbor, as well as excellent rail connections. The climate made it possible to shoot motion pictures year-round; hence Hollywood not only supplied jobs but also disseminated an image of the good life in Southern California on screens all across the nation. The most important single industry powering the growth of Los Angeles, however, was directly linked to the automobile. The demand for petroleum to fuel gasoline engines led to the opening of the Southern California oil fields, and made Los Angeles North America’s greatest refining center.

Los Angeles was a product of the auto age in another sense as well: its distinctive spatial organization depended on widespread private ownership of automobiles. Los Angeles was a decentralized metropolis, sprawling across the desert landscape over an area of400 square miles.

It was a city without a real center. The downtown business district did not grow apace with the city as a whole, and the rapid transit system designed to link the center with outlying areas withered away from disuse. Approximately 800,000 cars were registered in Los Angeles County in 1930, one per 2.7 residents. Some visitors from the east coast were dismayed at the endless urban sprawl and dismissed Los Angeles as a mere collection of suburbs in search of a city. But the freedom and mobility of a city built on wheels attracted floods of migrants to the city.

According to the passage, the most important factor in the development of agriculture around Los Angeles was the _________.

A. influx of “new residents to agricultural areas near the city.

B. construction of an aqueduct.

C. expansion of transportation facilities

D. development of new connections to the city’s natural harbor

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 6 to 10.

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the
day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires
immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call
during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A, guests tend to feel they arc not highly regarded if the invitation to
a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the
world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date
more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus,
misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American
life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S no one would
think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, he will say
a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
Câu 6: What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours?
A. You want to see him or her. B. The matter requires careful attention.
C. The matter is somewhat important. D. It is a matter of life or death.
Câu 7: According to the passage, time plays an important role in.
A. everyday life B. private life
c. school life D. social life
Câu 8: According to the passage, the author of the article may agree to which of the following statements?
A. It is appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before a dinner party date in the U.S.
B. It is best for one to make telephone calls at night because it costs much less.
C. If one is less than 5 minutes late, he has to make a short apology.
D. It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some
cultures.

Câu 9: The word promptness in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to.
A. preparationB. hesitationc. politenessD. punctuality
Câu 10: From the passage, we can safely infer that.

A. the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world
B. it’s a matter of life or death if you call someone in the day time
C. it makes no difference in the U.S whether yon arc early or late for a business party
D. if a person is late for a date, lie needn’t make any explanation

A.   Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct answer.

The ruined temples of Angkor are perhaps one of the mast impressive Seven Wonders of the World. Located in modern day Cambodia near Lake TonIe Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Asia, Angkor was the seat of power for the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the fifteenth century. The ruins of Angkor are documented as same .of the mast impressive ones in the world, rivaling the pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Why this mighty civilization died out is a question that archeologists are now only beginning to ponder. The answer, it turns out, may be linked with the availability of fresh water.

One possible explanation far the downfall of the Khmer Empire has to do with the inhabitants' irrigation system. The temple and palaces of Angkor were constructed around a series of artificial reservoirs and canals which were annually flooded to capacity by the Mekong River. Once filled, they were used to irrigate the surrounding rice patties and farmland during the course of the year. Farmers were completely dependent upon the water for their crucial rice crop. Without consistent irrigation, the farmers would have been unable to maintain functional crop production.

Scientists speculate that toward the end of the Khmer Empire the hydraulic systems of the reservoirs and canals broke down. The construction of hundreds of sandstone temples and palaces required an enormous amount of physical labor. In addition, as the capital of the Khmer Empire, Angkor contained upwards of one hundred thousand people who resided in and around Angkor. In order to feed so many people, the local farmers were driven to grow food quicker and more efficiently. After centuries of continual use, the irrigation system was pushed beyond its capacity. Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and the loss of water led to decrease in the food supply. With less food available, the people of Angkor slowly began to migrate to other parts of Cambodia thus leaving the marvelous city of Angkor to be swallowed by the jungle. Therefore, it is speculated that the Khmer Empire may have fallen victim to its own decrepit infrastructure.

22. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Modern day agricultural procedures in Cambodia.

B. A possible explanation for the, decline of a civilization.

C. The essential role water plays in farming.

D. Religious temples of the ancient Khmer Empire.

23. The passage preceding the passage most likely discusses ______.

A. is an enormous fresh body of water in Asia

B. was unable to supply enough fish for the people of Angkor

A. They supplied irrigation from the Indian Ocean.

B. They became non-functional due to overuse.
