Read the passage, and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D for each question.

Men have played a significant role in American society as the main breadwinner, and protector of the family. But the traditional role of men has slowly been transferred to women. Society is changing with women going to college, and gaining jobs. It may even happen in several years’ time when women are given sole earning responsibility in American society as the main breadwinner of the family. That is due in part to women gained working privileges equal to men in the 1970’s.

Up until the 1970’s, men were the traditional family breadwinners, while women stayed at home, raised the kids, made dinner every night, cleaned the house, and ran all of the errands. Men went to work every day, making enough money to buy a nice home, buy a new car every so often.

Once women were afforded the opportunity to work in the same jobs men once held, men’s more traditional foothold in the workplace was loosened. Women were given bigger jobs with more responsibility, but women take jobs with major responsibly with less pay than men.

The role of men in American society is changing with more women going to college, and obtaining careers; men are playing more untraditional roles at home.

Women are still giving birth to the kids, but are going to work to earn money to pay the bills, while men are staying home raising the kids, running errands, cleaning, making dinner. Young children, boys as well as girls, are being raised with dad at home taking care of the kids.

Millions of families are also raising their young with mom and dad sharing all of the responsibilities. Today’s role of men in American society is more of a shared role, with a more undefined role.

The traditional role of men was ……………..

A.the foothold in the family

B. raising the children when they were at home

C. the supporter of women

D. the main breadwinner of the family

Women have less leisure time than 15 years ago - as men take more for themselves

It may not come as a shock to women that when it comes to housework, figures show they are more than pulling their weight. But it may surprise them to find that far from taking on more of the burden, men are spending more time having fun than they were 15 years ago - and shouldering less of the unpaid work. Figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest that the amount of time men spend on leisure activities rose from 42.88 hours in 2000 to 43 hours a week in 2015. Over the same period, the number of leisure hours taken by women dropped - from 39.24 in 2000 to 38.35 in 2015.

The ONS said the data "suggests that there is a growth in inequality between men and women when it comes to taking leisure time”. Men are now taking quite a lot more time each week for leisure and women are taking less compared with 2000. It added: "Leisure time for women could be less than for men because although women are more frequently engaged in part-time work than men, they spend more time completing unpaid work such as household chores and childcare. The hours spent on unpaid work are likely to replace those hours that could have been spent on leisure activities."

An increased care burden could be behind some of the disparity. People in their forties and fifties have become known as the "sandwich generation" who must care for elderly parents while supporting children who are not yet financially independent and may still be living at home.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer to each of the question.

The majority of medium and large companies pay higher wage rates to men than to women, according to the latest government figures. The disparity, known as the gender pay gap, reflects the different average hourly salaries earned by men and women. The government data showed 74% of firms pay higher rates to their male staff. just 15% of businesses with more than 250 employees pay more to women. As many as 11% of firms said there is no difference between the rates paid to either gender.

Unlike pay inequality - which compares the wages of men and women doing the same job - a gender pay difference at a company is not illegal, but could possibly reflect discrimination. The average gender pay gap across all medium and large-sized firms is now 8.2%, as measured by median pay. in other words, men typically earn over 8% more per hour than women. Among those with the largest gender pay gap are airlines such as Tui and Easyjet, and banks including Virgin Money, the Clydesdale and TSB. Easyjet has said its pay gap of 45.5% is down to the fact that most of its pilots are male, while most of its more modestly paid cabin crew are female. Tui Airways - where men earn 47% more than

214women - has the same issue. Many banks also appear to have a gender bias on salaries. The Bank of England's wage rate for men is 24% higher than for its female employees.

By law, all firms with more than 250 staff must report their gender pay gap to the government by 4 April this year. So far only 1,047 firms have complied, leaving another 8,000 to go. Carolyn Fairbairn, director general of the CBI, denied companies were dragging their feet in reporting the data. "I don't see a reluctance," she told the Today programme. "I think this is genuinely quite difficult data to find, it is often sitting on different systems and firms are working very hard towards that deadline.

The best title for this passage could be ________.

A. Gender pay gap: Men still earn more than women at most firms.

B. The latest government figures show gender pay gap.

C. Many banks and airlines have a gender bias on salaries.

D. Companies should pay more for women because of their abilities.
