Đồ gốm Bàu Trúc được làm từ đất sét của sông Quao trộn với cát. Đất sét chỉ được lấy từ sông mỗi năm một lần, mỗi lần kéo dài nửa tháng. Đất sét được lấy nhiều hay ít tùy thuộc vào khả năng của mỗi người. Vào mùa thu gom đất sét, người dân địa phương cố gắng lấy càng nhiều đất sét càng tốt để tích trữ, để sử dụng trong cả năm
Hiện nay, người dân làng gốm Bàu Trúc vẫn làm đồ gốm theo phương thức truyền thống. Họ không sử dụng bàn xoay mà người thợ phải quay sản phẩm. Những người thợ gốm tạo hình sản phẩm của họ bằng bàn tayđôi chân khéo léo xung quanh một cây cột tròn chứ không phải trên bánh xe. Từ bước này, khối đất sét mịn ban đầu dần dần tạo thành khối rỗng tròn nhẵn, sau đó hình thành lọ hoa, chậu nước.
Những người thợ của Bàu Trúc sử dụng khăn ướt để làm nhẵn bề mặt sản phẩm. Những vật dụng này được trang trí bằng vỏ sò, ốc hoặc những bức tranh làm bằng tay về cuộc sống hàng ngày của người dân Bàu Trúc
