Read the following passage about London's Heathrow Airport and write A, B, C or D for questions 1-10.

A. Passport Control

If you are not transferring to another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland, you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane. If you are not British or a citizen of a country in the European Community, you must fill out a special form called a landing card before your passport is examined. This card should be given to you during the flight. However, you can also obtain one inside the terminal building.

When you enter the terminal building from your aircraft, follow the ARRIVALS signs. Make sure that you are in the right channel when you reach PASSPORT CONTROL. There is one channel for holders of European Community passports and a second channel marked "Other Passports.

B. Getting your Luggage

If you have luggage which was carried in the aircraft hold, follow the BAGGAGE RECLAIM signs after your passport has been examined. If you have only hand luggage, pass through the baggage reclaim area and follow the CUSTOMS sign.

C. Customs

All passengers arriving from a country outside Britain and Northern Ireland are allowed to bring with them a certain quality of duty free items. You can get information about how much you can bring by reading the signs marked Duty Free Allowances in the baggage reclaim area.

There are three Customs Channels: the Red Channel, the Green Channel and the Blue Channel. If you have something to declare, or if you are not sure about your Duty Free Allowance, you must go through the Red Channel. Passengers arriving from outside the European Community with nothing to declare must go through the Green Channel. Passengers arriving from the countries in the European Community with nothing to declare must go through the Blue Channel.

Please note that Customs Officers may stop you at any time and examine your luggage as you go through the Green or Blue Channel.

D. Transit Passengers

If you are immediately transferring to another flight at Heathrow that is not bound for a destination in Britain or Northern Ireland, you are a transit passenger and do not have to go through the procedures above.

Read the following passage about Mary Kingsley, a famous British explorer. Answer the questions.

Mary Kingsley was born in London in 1862, the daughter of a doctor and a domestic servant. She received little formal education, as in those days, people did not think that it was necessary to educate girls. However, she spent time in her father's library, which was full of travel and science books.

In 1892, her parents died and Mary inherited £4,300, a considerable sum at that time. Mary had always dreamed of travelling to Africa, and with the money, she could now do this. She arrived in Sierra Leone in August 1893, lived with local people, and learned from them the skills needed to survive in the jungle. She often went alone into dangerous areas to collect plant and animal specimens. She returned to Britain in 1893 just to be back in Africa the next year. She daringly climbed the 4,040-metre-high Mount Cameroon by a previously unknown route wearing a long black dress.

In 1895, Mary went home again, taking some rare specimens, including a live reptile which she gave to a zoo. Mary wrote two books with her experiences - Travels in West Africa and West African Studies - in which she described the way of life of the indigenous people. She was very critical both of the missionaries who set out to convert the local people and of British colonial rule. She thought they damaged the African culture. Her fame grew and she gave lectures all over Britain. She went out to Africa again in March 1900, but before she could travel north to the part she loved, she died of typhoid in South Africa at the age of 37.

1 Why was Mary not sent to school?

2 How could she afford to travel to Africa?

3 What did she wear to climb Mount Cameroon?

4 What was her opinion of missionaries and of British colonial rule?

5 How many expeditions to Africa did she go on? 6 What did she die of?

By the 1980s, the company had developed into a multi-million pound international organization with branches in places as far apart as London, Brussels, San Francisco and Tokyo.

My bedroom is often very messy. So after I read about minimalism in a magazine, I decide to do something about my bedroom. Minimalism is a style of living where you only keep the most important items and you throw away everything else. I started by throwing away a lot of the things which I didn’t use. Although it was quite difficult at first, I collected bags of clothes to give to charity. I sold some of my CDs and books online and other things I think I won’t need. After cleaning up cupboards, drawers and shelves, it actually became quite exciting to get things out of my room and create some fresh space. My room became larger and cleaner, I’m so longer stepping on things on the floor. I also feel a bit better, too.
