Tình hình kinh tế nước ta từ thế kỉ I đến thế kỉ VI có sự thay đổi tích cực, phát triển.
- Đồ sắt được sử dụng rộng rãi (công cụ, dụng cụ, vũ khí)
Nhà Hán thực hiện nắm độc quyền về sắt và đặt các chức quan để kiểm soát gắt gao việc khai thác, chế tạo và mua bán đồ sắt. Tuy nhiên, nghề sắt ở Giao Châu vẫn phát triển bằng chứng là: các nhà khảo cổ tìm được nhiều đồ sắt trong các di chỉ, mộ cổ thuộc thế kỉ I - VI (vũ khí, rìu, mai, cuốc,…)
- Nông nghiệp:
+ Sử dụng sức lao động của trâu, bò phổ biến.
+ Phong Khê: có đê phòng lụt, có nhiều kênh ngòi.
+ Hai vụ lúa: vụ chiêm, vụ mùa.
+ Cây trồng và vật nuôi phong phú.
Sách “Nam phương thảo mộc trạng” nói đến một kĩ thuật trồng cam rất đặc biệt của người châu Giao: để chống sâu bọ châm đục thân cây cam, người ta nuôi loại kiến vàng, cho làm tổ ngay trên cành cam,…; đó là kĩ thuật “dùng côn trùng diệt côn trùng”.
- Thủ công nghiệp:
+ Chính quyền phương Bắc giữ độc quyền đồ sắt.
+ Nghề rèn sắt phát triển, nghề làm gốm mở mang.
+ Nghề dệt vải (tơ tre, tơ chuối). Vải tơ chuối là đặc sản của miền đất Âu Lạc cũ, các nhà sử học gọi là vải Giao Chỉ.
- Thương nghiệp: hàng hóa trao đổi buôn bán.
+ Hình thành các làng.
+ Trao đổi với thương nhân Giava, Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ.
+ Chính quyền đô hộ giữ độc quyền về ngoại thương.
