He was born in a very poor part of London. His father was a comedian and his mother worked (1) a dancer and singer. However, (2) of them was very successful, so the family had very (3) money. The first time he himself earned money (5) dancing and singing, he was only five years old. He did many kinds of jobs, but what he loved (6) was working in the theatre.
When he was about 15 he joined a travelling theatre company and went on trips to America. On (7) such tour he was offered a part in a film, so he went to Hollywood, (8) he eventually became both an actor and a film director.
