Trên bàn đàm phán tại Hội nghị Berlin năm 1885 các nước lớn như Anh, Pháp, Đức đã dùng bút mực đỏ để phân chia châu Phi theo kinh vĩ tuyến (Ví dụ như: một phần biên giới giữa Ai Cập và Xu Đăng là men theo vĩ tuyến 22oB, biên giới giữa Namibia và Bostwana dài 700 km là theo vĩ tuyến 22oN); có khi dùng đường thẳng hoặc đường cong để phân chia biên giới; cũng có khi biên giới được đánh dấu tự nhiên dựa vào dòng chảy của con sông hay các dãy núi. Theo thống kê: 44% biên giới là được phân chia theo kinh tuyến hoặc vĩ tuyến; 30% là phân theo đường thẳng hoặc đường cong, chỉ có 26% là theo tự nhiên (theo dòng sông, dãy núi). Đây chính là các nguyên nhân tại sao đường biên giới quốc gia ở châu Phi lại thẳng vậy.
