Jessica's Suitcase

Chapter 1: The wrong suitcase

When Jessica got off the train, she realised that she was holding the wrong suitcase. She opened it and, to her dismay, it was a compact beige suitcase that looked a lot like hers, adorned with photos of Jeju Island's nature beauty. She found out that it was a suitcase from a Korean family.

Jessica has been working in Canada for several years. Today is December 30th, and she was visiting her parents. Jessica was in a hurry and if she returns the suitcase to its owner, she probably won't visit her family.

To return the suitcase, she had to wait for the next train from New York to Toronto, and then take another train on New Year's Eve. Jessica is homesick and wants to be with her family. She opened the suitcase again and found many personal items and clothing. Unfortunately, she couldn't use these items.

Finally, around 7 p.m., after two hours of waiting, she found the train she was on. Jessica boarded the train slowly and asked some guests. Meanwhile, the spokeswoman reported the loss of a suitcase with a description very similar to the one she took by mistake. She rushed to the lost-and-found, found office where she left the suitcase and found a beige suitcase with the label "Jessica's Suitcase". She got off the train with her suitcase.

Chapter 2: The next train on New Year's Eve

When Jessica arrived at the train station, she found herself missing the last train to New York. There was a train to Florida, from where some local trains went to New York, but she would miss the connection by about 20 minutes. Jessica decided to get the Florida train - she was so desperate to get home that she thought she could hitch-hike from Florida.

- Tickets, please. - Jessica looked up and saw the ticket inspector. He could see from her eyes that she'd been crying.

- Are you okay? - he asked.

- Of course I'm okay. - Jessica answered.

- You look awful. - he continued. - Is there anything I can do?

- No, I can deal with my problems myself. - Jessica said sadly.

He sat down and said:

- If there's a problem, I'm here to help.

The only thing Jessica could think of was to tell him her story. When she finished, she said:

- So now you know. I'm a bit upset and I don't feel like talking any more. Okay?

- Okay. - the ticket inspector told her, finally got up. - I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you make it home.

- Thank you. - Jessica said, continued to look out of the window at a dark city. Ten minutes later, the ticket inspector came back.

Chapter 3: Going home

The ticket inspector said:

- Listen. When we get to the Florida station, run as fast as you can to platform one. The New York train will be there.

- I just radioed Florida station. The train is going to wait for you. - he continued. - As soon as you get on, it'll leave. The passengers will complain, but let's not worry about that. You'll get home, and that's the main thing.

Then he walked away.

Jessica suddenly got up and went after him.

- I want to... - she grabbed his arm.

- It's okay. No problem. - he said.

- I wish I had a way to thank you. - Jessica said. - I really appreciate what you've done.

- No problem. - the ticket inspector said again. - If you want to thank me, the next time you see someone in trouble, help them. That will pay me back. And tell them to do the same to someone else.

When the train stopped, Jessica rushed to platform one and sure enough, the New York train was there waiting. A few hours later, she arrived at her house.

Years later, Jessica still remembers that unintentional mistake and the kind ticket inspector. After this, she still tries to help people and do the same thing as him.
